Summer Lesson

Description: They learned more than when they were in classes.
Rating: PG-13
Characters: Choi Seunghyun (BigBang), Choi Sooyoung (SNSD), Kim Jonghyun (SHINee), Luna (f(x)), Park Gyuri (KARA), Yang Yoseob (Beast)
Disclaimer: I do not own the characters in the fiction.  The story is only a narrative and does not involve any real life situation.  The whole plot of the story is written originally by myself.  If there's any similarity to other fictions, it is totally a coincidence.

Yoseob was not joking when he said he worked as a full-time dishwasher at a café nearby his campus.  People said that he should do internship over the summer and got paid even better.  Well, he could agree with that but the purpose of him working as a full-time dishwasher was because he wanted to be charitable.  Money was not something he was desperate for, but all he needed were experience and social satisfaction.  That was part of the plan anyway.  That was part of their plan.
Yoseob did not know who first came up with the idea but after they came back from their spring break, all of them agreed to do something that can bring more meanings to their lives and others’.  All six of them ended up working at the same café, taking full-time job for a month.  He was the dishwasher, Jonghyun was the cashier, Gyuri and Luna were the waitresses, while Seunghyun and Sooyoung were working as baristas.  Everything worked out pretty well so far.
Nevertheless, working in the café was actually only the first phase of their plan.  The plan was they were going to work for a month.  The pay check they received at the end of it was going to proceed to charity work.  Each of them had their own activity planned, in ways they were most comfortable with.   Not that they were uncomfortable doing charity together, but it happened that their charity targets were different.  That explained the different activities.

“More cups and saucers for you,” Luna put another tray of cups and saucers beside the kitchen sink.  Yoseob laughed.
“I’m tired,” he said.
“Bear with it.  It is our last day,” she smirked.
Yoseob smirked back.  He turned the tap off and held the side of the sink.  Standing up for hours made his heels painful and looking at the stained dishes didn’t help.  Moreover, he was the only one among the six of them working in the kitchen with other adult chefs.  The other five were working happily at the front and didn’t even do the heavy work.  Well, except for the waitresses, the others were not.

+++++

Luna set up her portable table and stool at the pedestrian walk.  She took out her different types of sketching pencils and put it on the table.  Finally, she put her sketching book on the drawing stand.  All those stuffs, she bought it using her café salary.  Well, she did not use all of them obviously.  That money and the money she was going to get from her sketching later will be donated to the old folks’ home.  That’s her target and besides doing charity, she wanted to gain more experience in her major in visual arts.  The plan itself was good; she just needed to see how it will all work out.

“I swear I don’t know that we chose the same street for our things,” that was Jonghyun talking.
“Oh my God!  Dude!  What are you doing here?” it was a surprise to her seeing Jonghyun with his guitar here.
“Well, it seems like I’m gonna have to sing and play music beside you while you draw, or sketch, or whatever you are planning to do,” Jonghyun smiled.
Luna was surprised, but it was good actually to see someone she knew while doing her stuff.  At least, she felt less lonely that way.  She quickly explained to Jonghyun her plan and to whom the charity money will proceed to later.
“Sounds good.  I’m looking for experience too for my music major.  But, the money from this street singing and those from the salary are going to be given to an orphanage,” explained Jonghyun.
“Cool!  Then, why don’t I be your first listener?  How much do I need to pay?” Luna asked.  Jonghyun laughed to that and gave her a folder full of songs choice.
“It’s up to you how much you wanna pay.  But, first of all, pick up your song,” said Jonghyun.
“Dude.  This is amazing.  You are like a radio where I can request songs.  Also, I got to choose how much I wanna pay,” Luna tossed a ten-dollar note into a piggy bank Jonghyun had put in front of himself, “Jason Mraz, I’m Yours.”
“Nice song,” Jonghyun said and getting ready with the guitar, “And why don’t you start drawing me?  I promise I will pay when you are done,” Jonghyun suggested.
“That’s…cool!!!  Alright.  All set,” Luna moved to her place and both of them started their missions.
That drew the public’s attention to them.

+++++

She had done it in the morning at a different park not too far from here.  She was quite sure she would be able to get more attention this evening.  She supposed to.  She needed attention, or else her mission was not able to succeed.  Her target was people’s health.  No people, then no project.  That’s it.

“Seriously, this morning I managed to get only seven women and seven dollars!” she patted her handmade signboard, written “A-Dollar Aero-Dance.  Easy and Fun.  Lose Weight and Be Healthy” in black ink.  Sooyoung rolled her eyes at her own piece of work, noticing how uncreative it was.
“It’s so silly, that name of your project,” voice of a man, very deep.
Sooyoung turned her head to the owner of the voice and she saw a man, well, not exactly, but a bear.  Not a real bear but a bear suit with a man in it.  The sight was cute but the words were offending.
“Who are you then, silly-suited man?” she asked, giving back to the man.

That bear-man pulled the head off and the man revealed himself as Seunghyun.  Sooyoung wanted to laugh if she was not more surprised.
“Seriously?  Seunghyun?  Bear?  What’s your plan in that suit?” she asked.
“Well, you see.  My target is kids.  I brought balloons and milk and juice with me.  I think that if I could make them happier, I would feel better,” Seunghyun explained.  Sooyoung was amused.
“Wow!  That’s very noble of you.  It was a surprise, you know, someone like you.  I mean, I’ve never seen you with kids before.  I would take it in better if it was Jonghyun or Yoseob,” she said rather frankly.
“I know.  That’s why I choose to do this.  I want to see if I could handle them.  I want to see if I could level with them,” he said.
“You’re funny, you know that, Seunghyun?” Sooyoung stared again at her signboard.
“I know I am.  But, I still stand with my opinion.  Your project’s name’s silly,” Seunghyun stared also at the board.
“You think so?” Sooyoung asked, offended again.
“A-Dollar Aero-Dance?” he shrugged.
“Well, yes.  Aerobic and dancing.  Where can you get any class with both activities in it for one dollar?” Sooyoung defended her idea.
“Well, your activities are good.  But, you could change the name,” Seunghyun gave his thought.
“What am I supposed to name it?” asked her.
“What are you collecting money for?” without answering her, he asked another question.
“To the Women’s Society.  I’ll make sure the money goes to single mothers,” she said.
“You’re good.  Very thoughtful,” Seunghyun smiled.
“So…you have a name for my project?” she asked again.
“On the second thought, you can just proceed with that, but add in “Leave your kids attended by Mr. Bear!” somewhere in it,” Seunghyun suggested.
“What do you mean exactly?” Sooyoung was confused.
“Well, you know.  You are a woman and you might be able to attract more women than men.  But, if women have kids with them, how could they exercise with you?  So, they could leave their kids with me and join your project.  This is just a suggestion though,” said Seunghyun.
“You mean you will join me?” asked her.
“Yeah,” he nodded.
“Oh, Seunghyun.  Thanks a lot for helping me.  That’s…that’s very kind of you,” Sooyoung suddenly turned very bright.
“Nope.  We help each other,” he said humbly.
“Oh, yes.  My project, it is twice a day, morning and evening, every day,” she explained because he might not want to join after he knew that.
“It’s fine.  I’ll join you whenever wherever,” Seunghyun gave his assurance.  Sooyoung smiled.
“You sure?  It is summer, you know that?  You might get heat stroke staying in that suit for hours,” she asked him again.
“Don’t worry.  I’ll manage that,” he assured her.

+++++

Gyuri was wandering at the corridor, looking at patients being pushed in wheelchairs, at visitors who wore sad faces around.  Such a scene, but she was getting used to it by now.  Since the beginning of the summer, Gyuri had been coming to the hospital after getting off work.  It was because of a particular boy.
“Gyuri, out of many places on Earth, I see you here.”
Gyuri quickly turned her head towards the voice and for a while, she thought she had her neck broken.  She saw Yoseob, with flowers and books in both hands and he had a green nametag attached to his shirt.
“What are you doing here?” Gyuri was surprised to see him, but she smiled at the sight of him.
“I am a hospital volunteer.  That’s my project.  What are you doing here?” Yoseob smiled back.
“Hospital volunteer?  That’s…very kind of you.  I…I am helping a certain someone.  Yeah, helping a certain someone,” Gyuri did not know how to describe herself.  She was sure as hell all her friends were like Yoseob, doing charity for a number of people in their own chosen groups.  Her target was only a boy.
“Really?” Yoseob asked and for a moment Gyuri thought he was going to laugh, “Who’s that lucky person?” he asked.
“Are you done with your job?” she asked without answering.
“I am going to my last department.  The cancer patients’ ward,” answered Yoseob.
“Good.  I am heading there too,” Gyuri said and quickly pulled Yoseob with her.  He just followed without any words since he’s heading there anyway.
Gyuri stopped in front of a room of a patient.  Yoseob saw she gripped even stronger the envelope she had been holding since just now.
“He’s Dongwoon and no, he’s not lucky.  He has been battling with chronic leukaemia for four years now.  The doctor says there’s yet a suitable donor and the cancer cells have spread to his heart and lungs.  He has never left this room since that.  The doctor says he’s too weak,” Gyuri explained before she took Yoseob into the room.
“You’re helping him!” Yoseob was more surprised.  Gyuri nodded.
“I am just doing what I can,” she said.
“How do you get to know him?” Yoseob asked.
“He is…my brother,” Gyuri said. This time Yoseob felt like he had just been stupefied.  All of them friends knew that Gyuri was the only child of her single mother.
“You’re joking,” he went.
“No, Yoseob.  The patient inside this room and I, we’re siblings.  Same dad,” she revealed.
“Wow!  Spectacular, I guess,” Yoseob just cannot find the right word at the moment.
“Yeah.  It’s a long story.  Anyway, you want to meet him or not?” asked Gyuri, didn’t want to extend the conversation.
“Oh, yes.  Might as well get on with my job,” he said.
Gyuri pushed the door opened and both of them walked in.  Yoseob saw someone, even by the sight of him lying on the bed he could tell that the patient was tall.  It was unnerving to see the boy.  To Yoseob, Dongwoon looked like a corpse, maybe just waiting to die again.  He was pale and fragile, not to mention thin.  But, he gave Gyuri a sincere smile, very sincere that Yoseob felt like the world could be a happier place.

“You come,” said Dongwoon, voice soft and weak.
“How are you today?” Gyuri asked, while having a silent monologue with herself, ‘What do you expect, Gyuri?  He is obviously sick on the bed.’
“Never better,” he said optimistically and Gyuri nodded.  It was the same answer from him every day.
“How’s chemo?” she asked.  Dongwoon shrugged.
“Good, I guess.  I hope I will be able to go for surgery this time round,” Dongwoon said, “If ever I get a suitable donor or even have enough money for that,” he sounded hopeless.
“Doojoon is at the booth.  Our selling is getting better.  Even the result for the photography competition is going to come out tomorrow.  I believe we can win at least the 2500 dollars,” Gyuri said.  Yoseob was clueless on what they are talking about.
“I am sorry that you and Doojoon have to go through this,” Dongwoon was sincere.  That was what Yoseob deduced.
“Who’s Doojoon?” Yoseob asked for explanation.
For a second, the room was too quiet because the other two seemed to forget that Yoseob was still there.  But, before things got rather awkward, Dongwoon’s lips quickly formed a smile.
“You didn’t tell me you brought a friend,” Dongwoon said and then looked at Yoseob, smiling, “Hi, there.  Doojoon is my brother.”
“Our brother.  I forget to introduce you to Yoseob.  Dongwoon, that’s my friend, Yoseob.  And Yoseob, this is Dongwoon,” she just made it quick.
“Hi Dongwoon.  I am Yoseob, a hospital volunteer,” Yoseob took the chance to introduce himself.
After that, he quickly changed the dried flower in the vase on the bedside table.  He also poured water into the vase.  Then, he gave Dongwoon a few books that he can read.
“For you, in case you are bored,” Yoseob said.  Dongwoon eyes sparkled.
“Thanks.  I don’t know what to do in this room anymore.  This is something really thoughtful,” he thanked Yoseob.
“Well, yeah.  I have something for you too,” Gyuri gave Dongwoon an envelope and Dongwoon stared at it with a frown.  He took it from her anyway and opened it with care.  There were photos in it, of people, plants, animals, cars etc.  In short, they told story of life outside of his confined space in the hospital.
“Wow!  This is…Gyuri, this is just…you’re really kind.  After what dad did to you, you’re still good t-”
“No, Dongwoon.  It’s fine.  It’s fine,” Gyuri stopped him before he can get too far.  Yoseob quickly understood that the conversation was no longer for him to listen to.  He made a move to the door.
“I’ll be back.  Later, not too soon.  I still have to meet other patients in other rooms,” Yoseob said, trying to give them assurance that they can talk as much as they wanted.
Gyuri and Dongwoon did have a good conversation together.  Gyuri told him a lot of things.  That Doojoon was going to come visit the next day, that the booth Gyuri and Doojoon set up at the Art Festival was a hit and their photographs were selling good, that both Gyuri and Doojoon were sending their best photographs taken for photography competition advertised in the newspaper to get money for his medication and more.  They talked until Dongwoon told Gyuri that he was tired and wanted to sleep.  Gyuri let him sleep, hoping that he won’t just go away with it.  She continued staring at his sleeping face until Yoseob knocked the door and came in.
“He’s asleep,” she almost whispered and Yoseob understood the situation and just waited outside until Gyuri joined him.
They walked to the subway station together.  Both of them were quiet at first but Yoseob just cannot control his curiosity any longer.  He needed to know.
“Erm, Gyuri-”
“He looked for me during spring break, my dad.  Dongwoon is very sick and not even my dad, his mother or Doojoon’s bone marrows are compatible for him.  Dad decided to try his luck with me,” Gyuri gave a hint.
“You are going to be a donor?” Yoseob almost shouted.
“I registered.  They are going to test my bone tomorrow and if it is compatible with Dongwoon and if he is in a stable condition, we are going to have the surgery in a month.  That’s…only if they manage to kill the cancer cells in his lungs and heart through chemo,” she explained.
“You’re…really a brave woman,” Yoseob almost lost for words.  Gyuri shook her head.
“Dongwoon is my long lost brother.  So is Doojoon.  When my dad came to see my mom before and my mom persuaded me to do it, the donation, I didn’t want to.  I mean, my dad abandoned me for years and find me only because he needed my help.  But then, when Doojoon met me and talked to me one-to-one and even took me to see Dongwoon, I felt the connection.  At that time, I was thinking that I am not going to help my dad, but my long lost brother,” Gyuri smiled.
“Well, what really happened, before?  You know, your mom, your dad and their mom?  Well, if you don’t mind me knowing?” Yoseob asked.  Gyuri sighed.
“My dad and their mom are husband and wife, even back then.  My mom told me this.  There’s something like bachelorette party for his friend and he and she joined and that’s when it happened, I happened.  My dad takes responsibility though.  I mean, all my expenses are given to mom by dad, since I was a baby.  Even until now, including my tuition fees.  My mom and dad never really communicate with each other though.  The money is always in the bank account.  That’s the only part disappointing me a lot, that he never really tries to have a bonding with me,” Gyuri explained.
“Well, you’re a person with big heart,” Yoseob complimented.
“I tried my best.  Both Doojoon and I, we take after dad.  We are into photography.  With the café salary, I bought a better camera set to take better photos.  Doojoon and I open a booth at the Art Festival to raise enough money for Dongwoon.  We also send our photos for photography competition, like a lot of them.  We try to win money.  We do everything in our might,” said Gyuri.
“He’ll make it through.  Dongwoon, I mean,” Yoseob said.
“You really think so?” Gyuri’s eyes sparkled.
“I met a lot of patient today, Gyuri.  Just one day makes me able to tell which of them are giving up or which of them are determined to live.  Dongwoon is the type who wants to live to die old,” Yoseob smiled.
For the first time that evening, Gyuri’s tears flowed down and a bright smile formed from her lips.
“I know,” she said.

+++++

Jonghyun knew that he didn’t take any class for the summer but he also knew that he learned more than when he was in classes.  This thing they were doing taught them that life was not simple.  It was not like you sit down in classes, you learn, you pass exam, you get a job and live happily.  There’s something more than that.  You’re not living alone in this world.  There are others.  If you succeed alone, that’s only a success.  The victory, the highest achievement in your life however, could only be gained when you can bring others to success with you.  That’s what Jonghyun learn.
He chose the orphanage because he thought those kids were very unfortunate to live by themselves at such young ages.  Jonghyun knew very well his own parents gave him everything to see him succeed in his own life.  But them?  They didn’t have parents anymore.  He just thought if he could give just a small service of what his parents had given him all this while, they might be able to succeed to.  That’s his target.
The six of them only have 3 weeks of summer holiday before the classes begin again.  After a month working at the café and after a month involving themselves with the society and gain money, it was about time for them to give back to the society.  After the café and street singing, Jonghyun got more than enough money to spend for the kids at the orphanage.  Part of it thanked to Choi Minho, a loyal customer that asked for a song every morning and gave ten dollars in return.  Jonghyun went to the orphanage every morning these three weeks to spend time with them.  He took them to the bookstore.  He bought them clothes, books and school’s necessity.  He bought them food they never get to eat.

What made Jonghyun happier was that he had this deal with Luna ever since they first knew their projects at the same street.  They will spend the last three weeks of summer together.  In the morning, Luna helped him at the orphanage.  In the evening, he helped Luna at the old folks’ home.  Things went smooth.  Jonghyun got to see happy faces of the kids and Luna got to cherish her time with those old and wise people, just like she used to with her late grandmother.  It was a good deal and Jonghyun could never find such a happy summer in his life.
“Jonghyun, it’s about time for us to go,” Luna reminded him when he was helping a girl to try the school uniform they bought for her just now at the bookstore.  Jonghyun nodded.
Luna and Jonghyun wanted to get off early that day.  They wanted to see Gyuri before she went for the surgery.  Since they knew about Gyuri and her brother, they had always wished for a miracle to happen.  It did happen.  Gyuri was proven compatible by Dongwoon’s medical team and Dongwoon was stable enough to go through a surgery.  The surgery on Gyuri will happen in the afternoon and Dongwoon will have it tomorrow morning.  All of them promised to be there.
They met Gyuri and also Yoseob, Seunghyun and Sooyoung.  They also met Doojoon for the first time.  He looked very concerned but Gyuri looked exceptionally bright.  She was ready to be rolled into the operating room.  She asked them to look after Dongwoon while she was in the room.  They promised her.  When she was rolled in, they prayed that everything will go well.
“She’s brave, isn’t she?” Luna asked.

“She is very brave,” Doojoon answered.
Jonghyun smiled.

+++++

Seunghyun smiled when the doctor told them that the surgery on Dongwoon was a success.  Sooyoung held his arm very tight that he could feel it was getting numb.  She smiled too.  Both of them looked at Gyuri on the wheelchair.  She was pale and tired after the surgery yesterday but the news can’t prevent her to smile out of joy.  He hugged Doojoon, for the first time after they met.  Jonghyun and Luna who was just arrive also jumped out of joy.  Yoseob thanked Lee Jinki, the doctor, bowed and shook hands with him, but he just felt that was not enough for the doctor who just saved his new friend.

Seunghyun looked at Gyuri, now with tears in her face, being pushed by Doojoon to Dongwoon’s room perhaps.  She looked very happy.  It was like the highest achievement in her life.  Out of all of them, she was the only one whose target is a person, only a person.  He might be kind, giving kids healthy food and looking after them and making them happy with the balloons.  Sooyoung might be nice by getting men and women to look after their health by dancing and exercising and also helping single mothers out there.  But, Gyuri was saint.  She was determined to collect money to save a brother she never knew was exist and she was brave enough to go through pain by becoming a donor herself.
Seunghyun concluded that by having a big group in the society to give help doesn’t make a person more thoughtful than the one who chooses to help only a person.  It was how a person means it and determines to give all for the others that matter the most.  Gyuri showed them that at least.  Yoseob even told him that he saw how dedicated Gyuri was to motivate Dongwoon to live and fight until the end and that was that motivated Yoseob to the same to others in the hospital.  Seunghyun smiled at his own thought and followed the others who were going to Dongwoon’s ward.
They learned a lot that summer.

The First Flower Bloom

Description: The lawyer wanted to prove the innocence of his client, but the defendant wanted to plead guilty. (Psychological thriller, AU!)

It was cold and it was not going to get warmer any soon.  The winter took forever and the spring decided to wait.  There was no sign for green.  There was not sign for flower buds.  The trees were bald and the weather was gloomy.  Gloomy April was never good.  It was a bad sign, at least, for him.

It was the first time in his life as an attorney, a defendant wanted to plead guilty, when his lawyer clearly wanted to fight for him.  Attorney usually recommended a plea bargain to defendant, to reduce the charge on him, even though sometimes the defendant was not guilty.  In Jonghyun’s case right now, all the evidence strongly pointed towards his client as the murderer, but with his so-called lawyer intuition he knew his client was not guilty.  He offered to help him, to fight for his case, to find evidences that confirm his innocence, but Seunghyun insisted to plead guilty.  What on Earth is happening?  A client was ready to be convicted with freaking murder charge without trial?

“How do you know he is not guilty?” Sooyoung asked.  Sooyoung was his private investigator.  She had worked with him for many years and because of her, Jonghyun had never lost his cases.

“I just know it, okay!” he raised his voice.  He did not like people questioning his verdict.

“Chill.  You will wake your son up,” Sooyoung reminded him.

Jonghyun stopped pacing around when he remembered his son.  He sat down on his leather chair, facing Sooyoung.  They were in his mini office in his home, talking about this case since the evening they got back from the jail.  The prosecutor offered a plea bargain in which Seunghyun had to admit guilty and they will reduce the charge on the reason of mental illness.  But, Jonghyun knew by heart that Seunghyun was not guilty, not at all.  He was not a psycho killer, not even near.

“They offer to reduce the charge, Jonghyun.  It is a good deal,” Sooyoung voiced again.

“And what?  He will end up in a mental hospital without being crazy?” Jonghyun asked back.

“How do you know he is not crazy?  He spoke to an imaginary buddy named Minnie who asked him to kill.  Is he not a psycho to you?” Sooyoung asked.

“The way he spoke to Minnie is different.  Not in a killer-mode, not like that at all,” Jonghyun softened his glare.  He sighed.

“In what mode then?”

“The tone he used was like the tone I used when I speak to my wife,” Jonghyun said and Sooyoung froze.

+++++

Yoseob was called to the county jail by his friend, an attorney who was currently working with a psycho killer.  The prosecutor had their own psychiatrist examined Jonghyun’s client, and the result confirmed him to be schizophrenic.  When a psychiatrist had already confirmed that, Yoseob felt ridiculous for Jonghyun to ask him to confirm again.

“I don’t think it is schizophrenia.  Just examine him again,” Jonghyun begged.

“You wanted me to be in a room with a murderer.  How good is that?  Jonghyun, as your friend, I will always support you in whatever you do.  But, not this, when someone is confirmed a psycho by a professional psychiatrist.  Besides, it can reduce his charge for being mentally ill,” Yoseob tried to be reasonable.

“That’s the problem.  I don’t think my client kills.  He is not harmful.  I was with him yesterday and he was not at all furious or out of control.  He looked like he could fall apart any time.  He looked tearful and distracted and he tried to communicate with Minnie,” Jonghyun explained.

“Yes?  So, unable to distinguish between reality and fantasy.  He’s schizophrenic.  And you said he doesn’t kill?  He murdered his own sister and son.  I would call you a psycho if you kill your own son as well,” Yoseob went.  At the mention of his son, Jonghyun froze.  The thought of killing his own son will never cross his mind.  His son was the only one he got.

“I just think it could be a scheme plotted by the prosecutor to win the case.  They made the plea bargain, my client admit guilty, end of case.  But, I know by heart he is not guilty.  The story that he killed his own sister and son is something that people believe, that the prosecutor believe and try to make more people believe it.  But, not me, Yoseob.  Just help me with this one,” Jonghyun begged.  Yoseob sighed.

“Alright, I do this as a court procedure, that you could have a witness from your side.  But, I am going to be honest.  If he came out a psycho, you have to let him plead guilty,” Yoseob said.

“Thanks, buddy.  Thanks a lot,” Jonghyun smiled.

+++++

After an hour, Yoseob came out with a satisfying result for Jonghyun.  For the first time after he was given the case, Jonghyun could feel some hope on his case.  It was almost the same like the first spring flower blooms.

“You are right, Jonghyun.  I think he is mentally stable.  But, he looks broken, like he no longer wants to live.  It is like getting a death sentence is a way for him to escape his life,” Yoseob explains.

“Just like my thought,” Jonghyun nodded.

“Find a way to confirm his innocence, Jonghyun.  Just like you, I think he doesn’t kill.  He’s a doctor.  If he wants to kill, he would have done it earlier,” Yoseob said.  Jonghyun nodded again.

Before they could walk out of the jail, his phone rang.  Jonghyun quickly answered the call when he saw Sooyoung as the caller.

“I have good news,” he said quickly.

“Me too.  I got a search warrant and I went to Seunghyun’s house.  I checked his Polaroid album.  Jonghyun, Minnie was his wife,” Jonghyun heard Sooyoung clearly.  He looked at Yoseob and gave him a sign to follow him.

“I’ll be there soon,” Jonghyun said.

+++++

“No wonder his wife left him.  He is a murderer,” a neighbour said and Jonghyun could just thank her for the information.

“That’s the fifth one that said she left him,” Sooyoung said.

“Even so, nobody had seen her leaving right?” Jonghyun said.

“What are you trying to say?” Sooyoung asked.

“His wife might be dead,” Jonghyun voiced his thought.

“Where’s the body then?” Sooyoung asked again.

“Hidden,” Jonghyun shrugged.

“Not helping you though.  If the body was found, prosecutor could say that it was him murdering his own wife.  Make him more psycho to me,” Sooyoung suggested.

“Impossible.  Seunghyun said Minnie asked him to kill his sister.  Maybe his wife is seeking revenge,” Jonghyun said.

“Whoa.  Whoa.  Mr. Kim, are you implying that he spoke to the spirit of his wife?” Yoseob cut through their conversation.  Jonghyun looked at him.

“Yes, Mr. Yang,” Jonghyun nodded confidently.

“I am a person of science.  If you are saying this supernatural stuff, I’m out of this.  I don’t believe in this stuff.  Besides, the court won’t accept this stuff as evidence,” Yoseob raised both his hands.

“We’ll find evidence through this.  Maybe we could find a way to talk to his wife,” Jonghyun looked at Sooyoung.

“I have to say that you are the one mentally ill, Jonghyun.  Not your client,” Yoseob shook his head in disbelief.

+++++

“She is my friend.  The best I could find,” Sooyoung said.

They were walking through a deserted corridor of an old apartment building.  Jonghyun were told that the building was haunted, but it was afternoon and he couldn’t care less.  The place gave him goosebumps though.

“Thanks a lot,” Jonghyun muttered.

“Still, I don’t think this is a good idea,” she rolled her eyes.

Sooyoung knocked on the door and a few seconds later, it was opened from inside, revealing a young women with face so pale and eyes so distant that Jonghyun was not sure she was looking at him.

“I thought you say two, Sooyoung, but there are three of you,” Luna said and welcomed them inside.

“Is she even human?” Jonghyun muttered to herself.  Out of sudden, the women put her palm on his cheek and smiled to him.

“You could feel my palm young man?” she asked and Jonghyun nodded out of fear, “Is it warm?” Jonghyun nodded again, “Is that not human enough for you?”

Jonghyun nodded a few times until she pulled back her hand and gave him a glare that Jonghyun will remember throughout his life.

“I’m Luna,” she said, “Sorry that you have to walk through this building.  But, I already told my friends that you guys are not harmful.”

“Friends?” Jonghyun asked sarcastically.

“Yes, Mr. Kim.  You, out of all people should understand that it is better to have ghost friends than human friends, should you not?” Luna asked.

“Alright, guys.  Should we discuss the case?” Sooyoung decided to stop their intense staring competition.

+++++

“Is he asleep?” Gyuri asked Jonghyun about their son.

“Yes, he is,” Jonghyun answered his wife.

Gyuri hugged him passionately and Jonghyun felt that his tiredness had gone within seconds.  His wife was always there for him to listen to every single problem he had at work.

“I miss you,” he said.

“I miss you, too,” she replied.

“Am I on the right path, Gyuri?  Is he really not guilty?” Jonghyun asked.

“He’s not.  Trust me, Jonghyun,” Gyuri said softly.

“Always.”

+++++

“Seunghyun, you know what actually happened.  Tell me, so that I could help you clear your name,” Jonghyun tried to persuade him again.

“I killed her.  I killed my sister,” he said.

“I’ve spoken to you a few times.  I know something is missing.  You admit killing your sister but not your son.  What happened actually?” Jonghyun asked him.

“Minnie allowed me to kill, so I killed,” Seunghyun avoided eye contact.

“Minnie is dead,” Jonghyun tested his client.  Seunghyun froze in his seat.

“No.  My fault.  I shouldn’t let her die.  I shouldn’t.  My fault,” he cried.

“Not your fault, Seunghyun.  Not at all.  Your sister, she tried to kill you,” Jonghyun tested again.  At this, Seunghyun shook his head vigorously.

“Not my sister.  I am the bad person.  Just kill me.  Just kill me!” he said.

“My wife told me you are innocent,” Jonghyun said.

“You don’t know me.  All of you.  Don’t know me!  I am a killer,” he said.

“Seunghyun, my wife spoke to yours and your wife said you are innocent,” Jonghyun said.

Seunghyun froze again and looked deeply into his lawyer’s eyes.  For the first time, the tears that he kept since the event happened went down.

+++++

“It happened here,” Luna said once she stepped into Seunghyun’s house.  The crime scene was already cleaned from everything.  Evidence was already bagged by the police and is analysed by their investigators.  Of course they chose the prosecutor’s side, so Sooyoung must do everything she could for Jonghyun.

“The forensic unit said his sister was killed because of head trauma, caused by the corner of this table.  Seunghyun admitted pushing her sister and she knocked her head at the table and died instantly,” Sooyoung explained.  Yoseob could feel his hair stood up.

“Why would he do that?” Yoseob asked.  Luna touched the corner of the table and closed her eyes.  The event replayed in her mind.

“There was a fight,” Luna said.  Yosoeb rolled his eyes.

“Of course, duh,” he said.  Sooyoung ignored Yoseob.

“Yeah.  The neighbour told me Seunghyun killed his son and his sister tried to defend her nephew and he pushed her instead causing her death,” Sooyoung said.

“Doesn’t make sense.  How could the neighbour see inside the house?  The door must be closed,” Yoseob suggested.

“The door was opened.  The neighbour said she saw people struggling and after a while Seunghyun pushed his sister to death,” Sooyoung explained.

“It sounds like Seunghyun was defending himself from his sister,” Yoseob shrugged.

“What is the estimated time of death of his son?” Luna asked.

“That is something strange to me.  Time of death was estimated to be around 6 to 7 pm for his son, but then Seunghyun was seen killing his sister around 9 to 10 pm.  Why would he wait that long to kill his sister if he can just finish them off at once?” Soouyoung asked.

“6 to 7 pm?  He’s already back from work?” Yoseob asked?

“Yes.  According to the neighbour, he is always back by 6 pm.  His workplace confirmed that,” Sooyoung told them the detail.

“There must be something.  Did anybody check his cellphone?” Yoseob asked again.  Sooyoung took time to digest that before she shook her head.

“What is the cause of death of his son?” Luna asked with eyes closed, holding a pen that was on the table just now.

“According to the forensic unit, it was caused by eight stabs, two of them were fatal.  The object used was a long, sharp rod, like a screwdriver,” Sooyoung said.

“Or a pen,” Luna continued, “You said her sister was an art student?” asked Luna.

“She was,” Sooyoung nodded.

“This pen is hers and it was used to kill both his wife and his son,” said Luna.

“His wife?” Yoseob said.

“Backyard.  Flower bed,” Luna said and the three of them sprinted to the back of the house.

+++++

“Forensic unit found her body.  Minnie’s body.  They are examining her right now,” Jonghyun said.  Seunghyun was unresponsive to that.  Jonghyun pulled out the pen and put it on the table between them.

“You recognize this?” he asked.  Seunghyun’s eyes became very wide.

“I killed them.  I killed them all,” he said.

“This pen is belonged to your sister.  The object that killed your son and might as well is the object that killed your wife.  You sister killed and you tried to defend.  Am I right?” Jonghyun asked.

“No.  I killed them.  I killed my wife.  I killed my son,” Seunghyun tried to convince his lawyer.

“Your son died around 6 to 7 pm.  We found your alibi.  You were with a friend that time.  You did not kill anybody.  Why are you doing this to yourself?” Jonghyun looked at him, demanding an honest explanation.

Seunghyun’s shoulders started to fall.  He loosened up and cried in front of his lawyer.  Tears strolled down like waterfall.

“I should have protected them.  My sister was no longer herself since my mom died.  Mom entrusted her to me.  I should protect her.  I was not there for my wife when that happened.  It was my fault.  I knew my sister was unstable, but I didn’t call my neighbour to take care of my son.  I forgot.  Can’t you see?  It is my fault,” Seunghyun said.

“By law, you are not guilty.  So, let me do my job,” Jonghyun said.

“And stain my sister’s name?  My late mother trusted me to take care of her.  She is my responsibility,” Seunghyun argued.

“And mine is you, your wife and your son!” Jonghyun said strictly, “We have the evidence and witnesses.  I can free you from this.  I will do justice to your wife and your son and most importantly to you.”

“I want to be punished,” Seunghyun insisted.

“When it is not entirely your fault?  You should be grateful someone wants to bring justice to your family.  My wife died giving birth to my son.  Who should I blame?  Myself for getting her pregnant?  Or my son because she died to make him live?”  Jonghyun asked loudly.

“I…I’m sorry,” Seunghyun muttered.

“You’re sorry?  So, let me defend you and prove you are still worth living in this world,” Jonghyun said and he left.

+++++

When the jury said he was not guilty, he felt happy and thankful.  He just wanted to get on with his life again.  He failed to save his wife and his son.  But, as a doctor, he still can save thousands of life on Earth.

Alone in his room, he looked at the tree in his front yard.  The first flower of spring had bloomed and it was a sign of hope, of a new beginning.

+++++

He had a good sleep last night.  His wife had accompanied him the whole night and when he woke up that morning, his wife was still there beside him.

“The sun will rise soon,” her wife said and kissed him on his forehead.

“Can you not go, Gyuri?” he asked his wife.

“I’ll come back tonight, Jonghyun.  You are so clingy,” she said.

“I just want be with you for the whole day,” Jonghyun said.

“Aww…cheesy, romantic husband,” she teased him, “Just kiss Yoogeun for me,” and with that she disappeared into thin air.

Then, the door was opened and a boy walked to his bed and lied down beside him.  His son looked at him with his big round eyes.

“Daddy, who were you talking to?”

“Nobody,” he kissed his son’s forehead.

“Detective Sooyoung said you can see and talk to mommy,” Yoogeun said.

“You believed her?” Jonghyun asked.  Yoogeun nodded.

“Mommy died giving birth to me.  Does that make me a killer?” Yoogeun asked him an unexpected question early in the morning.

“No,” Jonghyun patted his son’s head.

“Then, why does she hate me?”  Yoogeun asked again.

“She doesn’t hate you.  What makes you think she hates you?” Jonghyun frowned at his son’s question.

“She only talks to you.  She doesn’t want to talk to me,” Yoogeun said.  Jonghyun laughed to his answer.

“If you want to meet her, you only have to believe that she is always by your side, Yoogeun.  She will come to you,” he said.

Yoogeun looked outside the window while digesting his daddy’s word.  Then, he noticed something that made him smile.

“Daddy, the first flower of spring has bloomed!” he pointed.

Jonghyun hugged his son and thought of hope and happiness.

96 Hours

Description: Six students were the victims of a new deadly virus.  There was no cure but they were desperate to live and went through a lot of things to invent the antivirus.  Will they be able to do it before the 96 hours were up for them?
Rating: PG-13 (for profanity, really)
Characters: Choi Seunghyun (BigBang), Choi Sooyoung (SNSD), Kim Jonghyun (SHINee), Luna (f(x)), Park Gyuri (Kara), Yang Yoseob (Beast)
Disclaimer: I do not own the characters in the fiction.  The story is only a narrative and does not involve any real life situation.  The whole plot of the story is written originally by myself.  If there's any similarity to other fictions, it is totally a coincidence.

“I’m asking you again.  Is there anybody else?” the agent asked Luna, for the thousandth times that day, for anybody she made a direct contact with.  Not that she remember though.

“I told you, I can’t remember everybody.  I did make a contact with that tall librarian guy, with a murderer’s face and no one else.  Out of a sudden, your people coming out of nowhere and caged me here and I don’t even have time to speak.  Maybe you can ask my friends if they made contact with anybody.  I’m not the only one contaminated.  We were together in this lab when the tube broke off,” Luna had to tell the same story again and again.

“And you didn’t make contact with anybody else?” the agent turned to Seunghyun and asked, since he was the tall librarian guy, with a murderer’s face described by Luna.

“I was next door all the time after we touched each other-”

“We were not touching each other!” Luna yelled and Seunghyun flinched.

“Right, I was next door all the time after our skins brushed off when she gave me the book.  Suddenly, you came with your gang and dragged me here and don’t even tell me what the fuck is happening,” Seunghyun said, trying his best to restrain his anger.

The agent ignored the vulgarity Seunghyun just used and turned his attention to Yoseob and Gyuri, who were in a group with Luna in their scientific research.  Yoseob looked very confused while Gyuri showed her sleepy face.

“Miss Park Gyuri, anymore contact with anybody else?” the agent asked her.

“Only Choi Sooyoung,” Gyuri said and she was sure as hell that was repeated more than hundred times already.  The agent looked at Sooyoung who nodded.

“And I did not make any contact with anybody else.  I went outside, sat at the common, which was empty all the time while waiting for Gyuri to finish her experiment.  That’s it,” Sooyoung said before the agent asked her the same question again.

“Mr Yang Yoseob?” the agent asked.  Yoseob rolled his eyes.

“I told you that I gave the towel to Mr Lee’s helper, because Mr Lee asked me to do so.  After that, I resumed the experiment before you came and caged me up in this room,” he explained.

Suddenly, another man is taken inside the room.  He tried to pull his hands away from the other agents who happened to drag him the same way they dragged the others into the room.

“Let me go!  I can walk by myself!  Blind, aren’t you?” he shouted.

All of them know that must be Kim Jonghyun.  He worked part-time at the lab as a helper to Lee Jinki, a post-graduate student now doing scientific research for his doctorate.  Luna, Yoseob and Gyuri, who were always at the lab next to Jinki’s, doing their undergraduate research, knew Jonghyun as the one who always got scolded by Mr Lee Jinki.  Seunghyun and Sooyoung, and the rest of people in the university knew him as the dumbest guy ever existed in the engineering building.
“You must be Mr Kim Jonghyun,” asked the agent.

“I am and who the hell are you guys?  Why the hell did you drag me here?  I have a lot of work to do for Jinki and if I fail to finish it on time, damn I’ll get scolded again,” Jonghyun spoke.

“We are in a very serious situation Mr Kim and we need your cooperation in this,” the agent forced him to sit down.

“Mr Yang said he gave you a towel?” the agent asked for confirmation.  Jonghyun looked at Yoseob.

“Yes, he did, because my boss said I should do the cleaning work instead of him, although it was his group that broke the tube with that stinky, gooey, disgusting green fluid.  In the end, I had to wipe off the whole mess,” Jonghyun explained angrily.

“So, Mr Lee was there when the incident happen.  Did he, by any chance, have a contact with any of you, or directly to the fluid?” the agent asked.

“No, Mr Lee told me to wipe the chemical room clean and continue doing his work.  Then, he was back at his lab next door.  No direct contact with the fluid whatsoever.  Now, could you please tell me what the hell is going on?” Jonghyun started to feel annoyed.

Ignoring his question, the agent asked another question, “Did you come in contact with anybody after cleaning it?”

“No.  I even threw the towel into the chemical disposal bin after I cleaned it because it is just impossibly disgusting and who the hell knows what that is.  Could be any chemical,” said Jonghyun.
“You made the best decision indeed, not to throw it into the common dustbin, because I’m afraid all six of you now are contaminated with a genetically modified deadly virus, and therefore have to be quarantined,” the agent said.

“What?!” Seunghyun yelled.

“We already classified six of you to different groups according to your infection risk, based on your cases.  Luna, Gyuri and Yoseob, you are in Group 1, which were the first exposed to the virus, because we are afraid that some of the fluid might have splattered on you when the tube fell and broke.  Seunghyun and Sooyoung, you are in Group 2, in contact with those who were contaminated, which in our investigation have a slightly higher risk than them,” the agent stopped to wrote something down.

“Am I supposed to be in Group 2 as well, since I was in direct contact with Yoseob?” Jonghyun asked.

“No, Jonghyun.  Unfortunately, you are in Group 3, because you were in direct contact with the person infected and then was exposed to the whole fluid.  You wiped off the ‘whole’ thing, remember?  We still don’t know about your infection risk but we are very certain it is going to be very far higher than those two groups,” the agent said and Jonghyun’s face fell.

+++++

“The NNH can be whatever virus it wants to be and can infect any part of your body and we don’t know what organ it will choose to attack first.  Two of our agents were infected, one at lungs and another one at his skin.  We didn’t know what happened that time but at first one had pneumonia and the other one had bad skin rash.  They didn’t know they were carrying virus and they were in contact with two others, which in turn were infected by the direct contact and even get more severe diseases, pneumonic plague and smallpox respectively,” the agent explained.

“So, we won’t know which part of us that is going to be infected first?” Seunghyun asked, suddenly feeling scared of it.

“You won’t know until it shows.  I’m sorry,” the agent apologized.

“I’m sorry?” Luna said exasperatedly, “That is all you can offer?  Come on!  We are at the verge of dying here and all you could do is saying sorry?  What about antivirus, huh?  I think we need that the most now, not your sorry,” Luna rolled her eyes and threw her hands in the air.

“We don’t have antivirus for that.  Not right now, at least.  Our scientists are still trying,” the agent replied carefully.

He looked at them with sympathy.  Seunghyun started to play with his fingers while Yoseob looked back at him pleadingly.  Sooyoung busied herself wiping her own tears while Gyuri and Luna tried to comfort each other.  Jonghyun was the only one very calm, as though he was not infected at all.  He busied himself looking at some boxes in the chemical room, connected to the lab they are caged in.  Maybe it was true after all, the myth saying he was the dumbest guy ever lived on Earth.

“What happened after that?” Yoseob gathered his courage to ask.

“After it attack one of your organs, it will spread throughout your body and mess up with your system, including your immune system and unfortunately after 96 hours, you will-”

“-be dead,” Gyuri finished that for the agent, “Tell us something we don’t know.”

“Really?  No way out of this?  Anything that can help us fight this?  Live a little longer than 96 hours?” Sooyoung asked with a hopeful face.

“Our scientist managed to invent a drug to help slow the virus down.  But, at most it will only help you to deal with the pain.  Maybe you have a chance to live longer than 96 hours but I doubt you will stand longer than a week,” the agent said.

“Thanks.  That helps a lot,” Luna said sarcastically.  The agent tried not to look at her.

“So, the government just geniusly invented the virus but not-so-geniusly not trying to invent the antivirus at the same time.  Tell me, what is the purpose of inventing this virus?  To create a biological war?  Genocide?” Jonghyun started to speak and the agent was shocked by his accusation on the government.

“That is a serious accusation, young man.  The gov-”

“Accusation, you said?  Then tell me, Agent Dennis O’Neil,” Jonghyun showed a box, opened and empty, “This package of enzyme glycogen phosphorylase which Luna ordered from the National Pharmaceutical Centre for her research was delivered this morning, with the tube of virus might be unknowingly sent together.  From this receipt, it said it was packaged and delivered directly from NPC to our lab.  It looks like our government makes a secret weapon and the enemy uses it against the government itself,” Jonghyun said.

“Nobody from NPC sent the virus.  I believe NPC wanted to send you your order and somehow the virus was put in,” the agent replied.

“So, the government did invent the virus.  But, somehow some enemy has gotten hold onto NNH and sent it to your agents.  Four died and the government were still very stubborn to get rid of this virus, I don’t know, maybe for their own biological war.  So, the enemy decided to send it to the public so that the more people die, the more the government learn,” Jonghyun looked at the agent in the eyes.

“You know too much,” the agent said.

“Forgive me that I am a minor in Law and Criminology,” Jonghyun shrugged.  The agent sighed.

“The Neo-Noxious Heterofunction virus was invented to be spread, but only when NPC invented the antivirus.  The plan was to spread the virus and then sell the antivirus to get our pharmaceutical industry a fame, also, to improve our economy.  Somehow, the plan was leaked and the enemy got hold onto it and as you said, they are trying to teach the government by victimize the citizen with the virus.  Our agents and all of you, were unfortunately targeted,” the agent said.

“And I thought you are the stupidest guy I’ve ever met,” Sooyoung said to Jonghyun.

“For the thousandth times, I am telling you guys, I am not stupid.  I just hate lab experiments and for that Jinki calls me dumb and you guys actually believe it,” Jonghyun played with a pen.

“You have that dorky look on you.  Can’t really blame the others,” Yoseob said, “Besides, you are lucky at least we know it a few days before we are going to die.”

“We are not going to die,” Jonghyun said it with emphasize.

“How?” Gyuri asked.

“We are going to invent the antivirus ourselves.  Luna, you take the lead,” Jonghyun said and he started moving into the chemical room to prepare.

+++++

Luna complained about her aching limb and the others noticed that the effect had already shown.  The virus must have attacked her muscles and joints.  Every single movement she made will make her cried in pain.

“I don’t want to die like this,” she said while looking into the electronic microscope to get a good look on the virus.

“We are not going to die,” Jonghyun reminded again and he rolled up the sleeve of Luna’s lab coat.  He searched for her vein before gently injecting the liquid drug to ease her pain.  After a few seconds, Luna could relax a bit.

“Feeling better?” Jonghyun asked.

“Yes,” Luna nodded.

“Guys, I can’t find more test tubes,” Gyuri said and turned to them from the cabinet.  When they saw blood trickled down Gyuri’s lower lip to her chin and dropped onto her coat, they knew that she was affected as well.

“Err, Gyuri?  Are you okay?” Seunghyun asked.

“Yes, why?” Gyuri said.  She did not realize the blood staining her clothes.

“Do you happen to feel pain?  In your mouth?  In your throat?” asked Yoseob.

“Oh, I do feel like my throat is burning bu-”

“Gyuri!  Just stop talking, okay?  Stop!” Sooyoung yelled.

“Why?” that one word only caused more blood trickling down her chin.

Jonghyun quickly pulled her to the sink and rinsed her mouth.  Only then, Gyuri realized what had been going on.  She panicked.

“Oh my God!” and more blood coming out of her mouth.

“Gyuri, stop saying anything, not even a word from you.  Keep your mouth shut from this point onwards,” Jonghyun said and jabbed her arm with the drug.

“You use different needle right?” Luna asked Jonghyun. He nodded.

“Yoseob, could you please check on the manual, the daily dose for this drug per person?” Jonghyun asked.

Yoseob took the manual and started to look at it.  It turned out he saw only symbols he thought were supposed to be Greek, something he did not understand.

“Err…Seunghyun, do you happen to know how to read this?” Yoseob asked him.  Seunghyun looked at the manual and then to Yoseob, back and forth.

“Are you fucking kidding me?  Just read it.  It says there, not more than 50 ml per day,” Seunghyun said.

“Since when you can read Greek symbols?” Yoseob asked.

“What?” Seunghyun was getting confused.

“Wait,” Luna sensed something, “Yoseob, please read this for me?” Luna shoved Yoseob’s own lab note to him.  He frowned.

“Another Greek symbols,” Yoseob said.

“Oh, my God!  Yoseob, you lost your ability to read!  Even your own handwriting!” Luna looked so scared while saying it and Yoseob’s face fell.

“Damn it,” Jonghyun looked at Yoseob with a face showing an utter disbelieve, “The virus must have affected your inferior frontal gyrus or your inferior parietal lobule or might be your ventral temporal cortex.”

“Jonghyun, it would help me a lot if you could speak a language I could understand right now,” Yoseob demanded a clearer version of explanation.

“The virus must have attacked your brain.  You are showing a symptom of dyslexia, Yoseob.  This is just ridiculous.  I mean, you learned alphabets and you knew how to read, but it is gone just in a second.  How strong is this virus exactly?” Jonghyun took out his cellphone, planning to call the agent when suddenly Seunghyun fell onto his knees with a loud thud.

“Seunghyun!  You okay, dude?” Yoseob helped him to his feet, but he can’t bring himself to stand.  Gyuri, who was not allowed to speak at all, jumped up and down in panic, pointing towards a chair nearest to Seunghyun.

“A chair!  Give him a chair!” Luna shouted.  Quickly, Sooyoung pushed a chair for Seunghyun to sit.
“I…I couldn’t feel my feet.  It feels like I’m paralyzed from my knee down to my feet,” Seunghyun said once he was seated.

“God!” Yoseob pulled his hair.

“It makes sense,” Jonghyun said.

“What makes sense, Jonghyun?!  What?!  Nothing makes sense!  Not now!  We’re dying!” Luna yelled.  Jonghyun flinched to her emotional response.

“The agent told us that whoever in direct contact with the person who is infected will have a slightly higher risk of infection.  Luna has aching limbs and muscles, and Seunghyun who gets the virus from her suffer even a more serious illness, paralysed muscles and limbs,” Jonghyun explained.

“That’s it!  I give up!  That’s it!” Luna cried and Yoseob tried to calm her down.

Just then, Sooyoung jumped up and down, trying to catch everyone’s attention.  She seemed trying to speak something while shaking her head left and right and tears rolled down her cheeks.  At a moment, Jonghyun thought that the virus must have did something to his ears, that now he was deaf, but seeing tears on Sooyoung’s cheeks, he knew that he was not deaf.

It was Sooyoung who was mute.

“You can’t speak, Sooyoung?  You lose your voice?” Jonghyun assumed.  With that, Sooyoung stopped jumping like a mad girl and nodded.  Then, she fell onto the floor crying.

“She got it from me.  And even worse, she lost her voice.  She just can’t speak.  Oh, I’m sorry, Sooyoung,” Gyuri hugged her and Sooyoung quickly wiped the blood coming out from Gyuri’s mouth with a piece of tissue.

“Jonghyun, I’m infected at the brain.  How worse can that be for you?” Yoseob asked him.  Then only Jonghyun realized that he was the only one who did not show any effect, yet.  The hell, he can’t imagine what will happen to him sooner or later.

“I’ll be damned,” he said solemnly.

+++++

It had passed 36 hours now and they tried to work as best as they could.  Their man-power was decreasing since they had to deal with their diseases while finding the cure to the noxious virus.  Sooyoung and Gyuri can’t speak, Yoseob can’t read, Seunghyun can’t move from his waist down now and Luna’s muscles and limbs just kept aching all the time.

Nevertheless, Seunghyun still help them to find some books that could be helpful for references.  Sooyoung, whose major was nursing, kept looking for any sign of deteriorating health and once in a while gave them the drugs intravenously.  Gyuri, Yoseob and Luna were doing the most work to find the antivirus, since Biochemistry was their major anyway and they were quite used to lab experiments.  Jonghyun, who was a Microbiology major tried his best to keep up with them.

Seunghyun, your body temperature keeps fluctuating.  Sooyoung wrote that down on a piece of paper.  She noticed the raise in temperature of Seunghyun’s body.

“Like just now, it will be back to normal in minutes,” Seunghyun replied.

But, this is not a good sign.  The virus is now playing with your system.  Sooyoung gave her concern look to him.

“Not that we can do anything until we get this antivirus done, can we?” Seunghyun smiled.

“We are running out of time,” Yoseob muttered to himself after he heard Seunghyun.  But, that’s loud enough for everyone to hear.  Jonghyun sighed.

“We are not running out of time, guys.  We still have time.  Stay positive,” Jonghyun said.

“Right, Jonghyun?  Stay positive?” Luna had her breakdown again, “You can say that because you are the only one not affected by the virus yet.  If anybody going to die first, it will be any of us, not you.  What will you feel if you are in our position?” Luna asked.  Jonghyun looked at her in the eyes and tried to find the best answer.

“I will keep looking for the cure to be able to stay alive,” Jonghyun said.

“Easy for you to say that.  I am at the verge of giving up now.  I feel like letting the virus do whatever it wants to me, because I’m just fucking tired!” Luna shouted.  Gyuri flinched.

“But, you did not do that.  You keep trying to find the antivirus, because you have hope,” Jonghyun said.  Luna pulled her hair.

“NPC’s scientists tried it for months and they still don’t find it.  We have less than 96 hours now, how could we find it?”

“That’s what NPC’s scientists don’t have.  Desperation.  You don’t know what wonder it can do, Luna,” Jonghyun tried to get his friend back on track.

“Desperation?  What do you know about desperate, Jonghyun?  Did you lose your ability to speak?  To read?  To move freely, without being paralyzed or being in constant pain?  No!  So, don’t talk to me like you are desperate!” Luna bellowed.

“Hey, in case you don’t notice my blood test came out positive of the virus.  Just the same as you guys.  I’m in this too, okay?  I’m desperate to live too,” Jonghyun said.

“I don’t know, Jonghyun.  It is not fair.  We have to do this in pain, in disability while you are just calm and relax without being attacked by the virus.  You don’t understand,” Luna cried.

Jonghyun took a deep breath to calm himself down.  If fairness was what Luna was looking for, then he had no choice.

“Luna, Yoseob, Gyuri, stop what you are doing right now.  You can have your rest.  Let me do this on my own,” Jonghyun instructed.

“But, Jonghyun-”

“No, Yoseob.  If fairness is what you are looking for, then I’ll try to be fair.  Since I am the only one with able body right now, I think I deserve to have to do this alone,” Jonghyun said.

“But-”

“I insist,” Jonghyun said again and then he gave a forcing look to Gyuri.  Luna already put her book down and searched for a place to sleep.  Yoseob looked at Gyuri and finally put their apparatus down on the table, leaving Jonghyun to struggle with them.

+++++

Jonghyun had worked for straight 60 hours now and he started to feel a headache coming.  Usually a cup of coffee will be able to keep him up for another day, but where the hell can he get any coffee right now?  They can’t go out since they were quarantined in that lab and people from outside were not allowed to get any nearer to the lab even.  Their source of food came from some people who came a day ago, fully dressed like an astronaut, giving them some dried food.  That’s it.  And seeing Gyuri started to get a fever did not help at all and Luna had been vomiting just increase his level of desperation.

Seunghyun’s body temperature kept fluctuating and the only body part he could move right now was his right hand and his neck and head.  Even his left hand was not functioning anymore.  Yoseob had fainted once and for a while they thought they lost him, but hearing his still steady heartbeat gave them an assurance.  Sooyoung kept alert to give them the drug but sometimes she had breathing difficulties herself.  Jonghyun witnessed his friends’ condition deteriorating and he wondered how can he still standing without being affected by the virus.  Not that he asked for it, but he was sure his blood test came out positive and he was even labelled with the highest risk of infection.  So, what the hell was happening right now?

He stood up and that causes him an acute pain in his head.  He staggered back but regained his composure and continued walking to the lab freezers to see his second specimen.  He took out the petri dish filled with agar antigen specimen, to test it on his own blood which he drew just now.  He was going to look at the reaction under the microscope.  If it reacted with the virus, then he will multiply the antigen specimen for all of them.   If not, he needed to try the third specimen he had made.  He did not have much choice in this short time, but he hoped one specimen will actually work.

He was about to filled a beaker with water when he felt another pain at the side of his head.  His vision started to get blurry.  He massaged his temple in a futile attempt to get rid of the pain.  He regretted asking to work alone.  The effect of not sleeping for two days was not pleasant at all and he could feel like his body will just give up soon.

“Maybe somebody should take over,” Seunghyun said and Jonghyun narrowed his eyes to focus his vision on Seunghyun, “You can’t work alone straight without sleep in two days, Jonghyun.”

“I can’t force you guys to work,” Jonghyun said.

“Well, I can.  Just read for me and I will be able to do it for us.  Gyuri will be able to help too.  I am sure Luna had her rest too,” Yoseob said.

“Luna’s condition is bad.  She had been vomiting and I am sure that doesn’t feel nice.  Gyuri has fever and Yosoeb, I am not fond of the idea of you fainting all over this lab apparatus.  I need to get this done.  Your condition is deteriorating,” Jonghyun said.

I can help.  Sooyoung wrote.

“No, you need to look after them,” Jonghyun said.

You already look like shit.

“Well, thanks Sooyoung.  That was-” Jonghyun did not even finish with his words when he felt like tonnes of brick just fell on his head.  Both of his hand flew to his head, squeezed it to ease the pain.  The beaker dropped onto the floor and broke and the crashing sound woke Gyuri and Luna up.  Yoseob and Sooyoung were quick onto their feet, but not quick enough to catch Jonghyun when he fell onto the floor, his whole body was shaking violently, as though all his muscle was twitching in a weird way.  Worse, some of the shattered glasses actually wounded his skin.

“It is a seizure.  He is attacked.  It is a seizure!” Yoseob was worried.

As a nursing student, Sooyoung knew what to do.  She quickly turned Jonghyun’s body so that he lied on his side and waited until the jerking actually stopped.  Seunghyun used his right hand to drag his whole body all the way to Jonghyun.  Luna and Gyuri also hovered over Jonghyun to help, but knew better that they could do nothing until the jerking stop.  When it finally stopped, Sooyoung tried to bring Jonghyun back to his consciousness.

“Jonghyun, can you hear me?” Seunghyun asked.  Sooyoung tried to find any pulse and finally found a weak one.  She nodded to them.

“Jonghyun, come on.  Don’t do this to us,” Yoseob said this time.  Still, he was unresponsive.

“Jonghyun!  If you don’t answer me, I swear I will kiss you!  I swear, Jonghyun!  I swear!” Luna shouted while shaking Jonghyun very hard that Sooyoung had to stop her.

“Can you keep it down Luna?  Your voice makes my headache even worse,” Jonghyun finally spoke even his voice sounded very fragile.  Luna quickly pulled him into a hug.

“For a while, I thought you were really going to leave us just now Jonghyun.  Don’t you do that to us again, never,” Luna cried.

“Luna…it hurts.  Everything.  My head, my body,” Jonghyun complained.  Gyuri gave a sign to Sooyoung and she quickly caught what she was trying to say.  Sooyoung took the drug and injected it into Jonghyun’s arm.

“Now, better?” Yoseob asked.  Jonghyun nodded in response.

“We are equal now, are we not?” Jonghyun asked.

“Shut up, Jonghyun.  Just tell me what you got now and we will work together for the rest of it,” Luna said.

+++++

Jonghyun and Luna did not know how many hours had passed but seeing Seunghyun, Yoseob and Gyuri unconscious on the floor of the lab, looking so weak and fragile, they were very sure they had went over 96 hours now.  Sooyoung was now having difficulties in breathing.  Luna was helping her.  Jonghyun was still waiting for the laboratory chemical processor to do its final touch to the antivirus.  Everything went even more chaotic when Luna ran with a lot of pain to the sink and vomited again.  It sounded really painful and when she stopped, she just fell to the floor unconscious.
Sooyoung tried to get up to approach Luna, but Jonghyun stopped her.

“Stay where you are, Sooyoung.  Don’t move.  It will only mess with your breathing,” Jonghyun said.  Suddenly, a headache attacked him and he grabbed the edge of the table to calm himself down.

“Fuck this machine!  Can’t work even faster!” Jonghyun tried not to lose consciousness because once the cure was ready, he can’t expect Sooyoung to inject everybody with it, not with her condition.  He will be the one to help his friends.

A beep signalled Jonghyun that the cure was processed.  He took six syringes and inserted new, sterile needles into each, and drew the clear blue liquids into the syringe.  He tried not to lose consciousness although the pain was taking over him.  He ran to Sooyoung and tried to get the best vision of her arm with his blurry vision.

“The percentage of success is fifty per cent.  It is either you live or you die but have faith.  Try to fight it, try to be conscious,” Jonghyun said and injected the antivirus into Sooyoung’s arm.

Then, he quickly took another syringe to Luna.  He felt Luna’s pulse.  It was weak.  He quickly injected the antivirus and hoped that it will work.  He took out his cellphone and dialled up Agent Dennis number while running towards Yoseob with another syringe.  When the agent answered the call, Jonghyun tried to speak with the calmest voice he could produce in the agony he is experiencing.

“The antivirus was given.  Come tomorrow morning and pick us up.  Take us to the hospital.  Please…” Jonghyun said while giving a shot to Yoseob.  Then, he ran to Seunghyun.  He could hear Agent Dennis said something, but the pain in his head allowed him to focus only on saving his friends.  He dropped his phone and kneeled beside Seunghyun and jabbed him with the cure.  Then, with the last bit of energy he had, he injected Gyuri with the antivirus.

Finally, with the last syringed, he injected himself with the antivirus and everything went black after that.

+++++

Jonghyun woke up with the sound of a machine beeping.  He slowly adjusted his vision to the light and it focused bit by bit.  He tried to move but he felt too tired to even move a finger.

“Jonghyun?” it was Sooyoung’s voice and Jonghyun thought he was dreaming.  When his vision actually fully focused again, he could see all his friends looking at him.

“Oh, gosh!  Jonghyun!” he could see Gyuri spoke without blood coming out of her mouth.  Seunghyun was walking towards him and he tried to smile, seeing him able to move again.

“Finally, Jonghyun.  You have been sleeping for too long,” Luna said to him.

Jonghyun frowned.  Then only he realized that he was in a hospital room with machine attached to him to monitor his sign of life.

“What happened?” he asked, confused of things that was going on.

“The antivirus worked.  We were cured even before the agent came to picked us up.  All of us regained conscious the next morning after you gave us the cure, except you.  You have no idea how you scared us, Jonghyun,” Yoseob provided.

“It was bad.  The doctor said you had brain haemorrhage.  The doctor put you under medication through IV drip to decrease swelling and control your blood pressure, also to ease the flow of your blood.  You had seizure three times when you were unconscious and we almost lost you, really.  But, now you are okay, that’s what matters,” Seunghyun said.

“How long I was out?” Jonghyun asked after everything started to make sense to him.

“Almost two weeks,” Gyuri replied.

“You can read now, Yoseob?” Jonghyun asked.

“Hell, yes!” Yoseob went.

“Hell, it was the longest 96 hours in my life!” Sooyoung said and they laughed together.
