Playful Kill

Rating: PG-15
Characters: Taeyeon, Tiffany, Seohyun, Minho, Onew, Leeteuk, Siwon and fictional character.

Disclaimer: I do not own the characters in the fiction.  The story is only a narrative and does not involve any real life situation.  The whole plot of the story is written originally by myself.  If there's any similarity to other fictions, it is totally a coincidence.

“It was you, Emelyn.  All this while,” Leeteuk smirked.

“No,” she answered, “It was you.”

+++++

“It’s schizophrenia,” Leeteuk heard the doctor said.

“That’s really sick,” he heard Taeyeon cried.

+++++

They were sisters.  The eldest was Taeyeon.  The second was Tiffany.  The third was Emelyn.  The youngest was Seohyun.  If people said that a family was unfortunate if they have no boy as a child, they were definitely wrong.  These sisters proved them wrong.  These sisters, they were strong, physical wise, mental wise and sisterhood wise.  Taeyeon and Tiffany even planned to get married together, so as Emelyn and Seohyun.  That was how close they were.

Taeyeon had convinced her boyfriend, Leeteuk to wait until Tiffany and Siwon were really ready.  Leeteuk was fine, since he was in the army anyway.  He could wait until he’s done with his training.  But, the problem was Siwon always said that he wanted the wedding to be on a different date.  According to Siwon, a wedding was supposed to be a man and a woman’s special day.  So, why would Tiffany and her sister share the same day?

Another problem aroused when the sisters confirmed that Taeyeon had a stalker.  Not really a bad stalker though, just someone from another apartment building who always came to their second-floor apartment.  He dropped by the apartment to go with Taeyeon to work, since they work at the same place anyway.  He was kind.  He was protective.  The only problem was that Taeyeon was no longer available.

“You know that Junho boy really like you, right?” Tiffany asked.

“Yes,” Taeyeon answered.

“So, why would you go out with him?” Seohyun asked.

“Why wouldn’t I?” Taeyeon asked back.

“Well, that’s obvious.  You have a boyfriend,” Emelyn answered, “And he’s in the army.  Just imagine if he comes back sometimes and seeing you with another guy?  I am quite sure he would kill, you know?”

“Ok.  Thanks for your concern sisters.  I know you love me.  But, it is not like I am going out dating him.  We’re just going out for work together and then go home together.  What’s the big deal?” Taeyeon said while putting on a blazer on top of her blouse.

“What’s the big deal, you ask me?” Tiffany widened her eyes.  It was just so impossibly impossible that her big sister was that slow.

“The big deal is that he has a feeling of more than friends towards you.  And he’s close to you?  Nope.  I won’t try that with Minho,” Seohyun said while referring to the same situation with her boyfriend Minho.

“That’s a different situation, Seo.  Minho is in the US.  If you have someone so close to you here, who happens to have a romantic feeling towards you, Minho would feel betrayed.  Because he’s just not here and can’t possibly control the situation.  Leeteuk is here in Korea.  He knows what I am doing and he knows Junho is just a kid next building who likes me.  Leeteuk knows that I can’t possibly fall for him.  Leeteuk knows that he is better than the boy,” Taeyeon explained.

“You can’t be that slow.  My point is Leeteuk could get jealous, if not feeling betrayed,” Tiffany refuted.

“Ok, sisters.  Sorry that I can’t be in this conversation anymore.  I need to get to the office as soon as possible,” Taeyeon took her handbag and wore her shoes, “And I’ll be home late tonight, after nine.  I have this karaoke thing, remember?  The whole office is going.”

“Yeah, right?  What a right time for a karaoke party,” Emelyn said sarcastically, “Leeteuk is coming here tonight.  For a holiday.”

“I don’t forget that, Em.  I’ll be home after nine.  I still can meet him the whole weekend.  By the way Em, aren’t you and Seo having class today?  Get ready.  And Tiff, enjoy your day off work,” she said before she closed the door.  The other three sisters heard a greeting.

“Must be that Junho boy,” said Emelyn.

“Tae is too slow, isn’t she?” Tiffany asked them.

The Earth was wetted that night by the heavy downpour.  Going out was definitely a mistake since the thunderstorms was fierce.  However, Emelyn had decided to go to the nearest pharmacy to get cough medicine because Seohyun was soaked in rain when she came back from class.  The youngest was sneezing and coughing continuously after a while and Emelyn decided that it was better if she prevent any increase in temperature.

It was good to have rain like this once in a while in the summer.  At least, the weather didn’t feel scorching hot.  But, she must at least wear good shoes in the slippery condition of the road.  She didn’t and she had to deal with an unpleasant fate of having her elbow in contact with the road on her way back from the pharmacy.  It was not good at all when there’s mixing of blood and rainwater trailing down her fingers.  The sight was downright creepy.

“Shit!  I should have bought a bandage,” she muttered under her breath.  She looked back at the road leading to the pharmacy.  Under her umbrella, she saw water pouring everywhere and she went against her previous thought about going back to the pharmacy to treat her injured arm.  So, she went straight to her apartment.

The journey home was shocking as she met Leeteuk halfway, with Taeyeon in his arms, both of them were soaked by the rain.  Her tongue was tied, so as Leeteuk’s, while Taeyeon looked unconscious, even under the heavy rain.  For a moment, the sound of the rain was too deafening because every other sound just disappeared.

“Leeteuk, what happened?” she started first.

“Let’s go home,” Leeteuk quickly ran away without really answering her question.  Emelyn followed his lead.

They were just by the bus stop near the apartment.  Once they were in the building, Emelyn quickly pushed the button for elevator.  Both of them waited for the elevator without a single word.  When the door opened for them, they quickly stepped in and Emelyn pushed the floor button and the elevator moved again.  The next thing they knew was they ran for the door of the apartment and Emelyn pushed the door opened and the other sisters were in shocked.

“What the hell happened?” Tiffany shouted.  Seohyun stood up from the couch and looked at Emelyn, Leeteuk and unconscious Taeyeon, the three of them were soaked, and water dripping and cold and then Leeteuk spoke again.

“I found her at the dark, quiet alley, with Junho,” he said, adding more surprise to the event that just occurred.

“What happened?” Seohyun asked, feeling weird.  Taeyeon was at the karaoke party, with colleagues.

“She’s drunk, unconscious.  Junho was supposed to send her home. But…” Leeteuk stopped mid-sentence.

“But?” Emelyn didn’t like how it sounds.  She was nervous.

“There wasn’t a single clothes on her body,” Leeteuk said and quickly took Taeyeon to her room.  The other sisters followed, although they were almost as frozen as ice.

“You said what?” Tiff asked.

“I’m afraid she was sexually harassed by Junho.  I know long ago that I cannot trust that boy,” Leeteuk put Taeyeon on the bed, “Somebody, change her clothes!  Quick!”

Tiffany and Seohyun who were panic quickly did as instructed.  Emelyn didn’t.  Leeteuk and her stared at each other, suspiciously.

“Tiff, take care of Tae.  I need to go out to check on something,” Leeteuk said while giving Emelyn one, long, last suspicious stare before he went out again.  Tiffany nodded while crying and doing her job.

“Seo, take this,” Emelyn gave her the cough medicine she bought for her.  Seohyun took it but not without noticing her elbow.

“You’re bleeding, Em,” she said.

“I know,” she said slowly, “I’m going out again to get the bandage.  Take Tae to the hospital, Seo.  Make sure she is checked by the doctor,” Emelyn said and with that she left the apartment.

Instead of taking the path to the pharmacy, she took the opposite path, following Leeteuk slowly from behind.  She fished out her cellphone from her jeans pocket and made a call to her boyfriend.

“Onew.  I have to tell you this.”

+++++

When Taeyeon woke up, all of them were there.  Leeteuk was by her side.  Tiffany and Siwon were standing at the other side of the bed.  Emelyn, Onew and Seohyun were standing at the end of the bed.

“How are you feeling?” Tiffany asked.  She could feel Siwon squeezed her shoulder, comforting her.

Taeyeon did not answer.  She slowly took in her surrounding and wondering what was going on.  The sisters were feeling grateful as the result from the doctor informed that Taeyeon was free from sexual assault.  However, there was physical abuse though.  Taeyeon had some bruised at her arms and legs and one at her left temple, where they didn’t manage to register last night.  The doctor also had informed them that Taeyeon was heavily drugged.  The question was, who the hell would do that to her?  Junho?

“Where am I?” question was replied by question.  Taeyeon looked really confused.

“You are at the hospital,” Seohyun said.  Taeyeon was even more confused.

“You remember anything from yesterday?” Leeteuk asked her while wringing her hand.  Taeyeon shook her head.  It was all blur.

“I remember I was at the karaoke party,” she said.

“And?” Tiffany asked.

“Nothing.  I remember nothing after that,” she said.

They nodded and asked her to rest.  They don’t want to force her to think of what happened.  Emelyn told them she tried to find Junho in the morning, at his apartment, but there was no answer.  Junho’s neighbour told the house was dark and empty since yesterday.  He might not go home last night.  Leeteuk was suspicious by the information.  Tiffany and Seohyun were too tired to even think.  Leeteuk looked at Emelyn and Emelyn stared back at him.

“Onew,” Emelyn called for her boyfriend.

“Yes?”

“I need to talk to you,” she whispered.  Onew nodded and pulled Emelyn to a place hidden from
anybody.

+++++

As Emelyn and Onew spoke to each other privately, Tiffany and Siwon also had taken the time to spoke confidentially as well.  This time, Siwon who was agitated by the latest occurrence, wanted only to marry Tiffany and taking care of her.

“What happened to Taeyeon was really unfortunate,” Siwon said.  He held Tiffany’s arm tightly, showing how he really cared about her.

“It was a disaster,” Tiffany exaggerated, but none of them care anymore.

“You see, Tiffany.  Things got rather weird lately.  Everything was strange.  Taeyeon was carried home by Leeteuk and he claimed she might be sexually assaulted.  Turned out she’s not but she’s bruised.  Like there was something going on.  I’m afraid for you,” Siwon said like any gentleman would do.

“I know.  Things got rather strange lately,” Tiffany agreed.

“Tiffany, let’s get married,” Siwon was being quite frank and fast on that.

“What?!” Tiffany faced him.

“Please, Tiffany.  Don’t get mad.  I just…I think it would be better if I am always with you.  You know, taking care of you, won’t let anything bad happen to you-”

“I can’t believe you!  We are in the middle of a big crisis here and all you think about is a marriage?!”

“Tiff, please.  You misunderstood me.  The marriage is not the point.  The point is you.  I won’t forgive myself if anything happen t-”

“Shut up, Siwon!  This will never end, forever.  We bicker each day talking about this.  I told you, many times, that I will wait for Taeyeon,” Tiffany shouted.

“Tiff, it is you that I worry about right at this moment,” Siwon pleaded.

“Worry?  You sure?  If you are worried about me, then you will worry about my sister too.  You should know better, Siwon,” Tiffany said through gritted teeth and with that she left Siwon.

Siwon was sculpted on the floor.  He looked at Tiffany as she walked away.  When she turned around a corner, Siwon saw Tiffany bumped into Emelyn.  She heard their conversation, although it was quite distance.

“Tiff, what happened?”

“Nothing,” Tiffany answered, trying to get away.

“The way I see it is not nothing,” Emelyn replied.

“It’s a small matter.  The same old stuff Siwon and I had been talking,” she said and quickly left the scene.  Siwon saw Emelyn gave him a sceptic look and he quickly turned away and walked to the other side.

+++++

That night, Emelyn and Tiffany slept together.  Tiffany was tired.  She cried a lot in the day.  Seohyun was not at home.  She offered herself to take care of Taeyeon at the hospital.  Emelyn decided to accompany Tiffany at home.  Leeteuk and Siwon were also at the apartment.

“Siwon, you alright?” Leeteuk asked when all Siwon did was staring at the blank television.

“What?” he turned to Leeteuk.

“I said, are you alright?” Leeteuk asked again while taking a bottle of alcohol and a glass.

Without answering his question, Siwon sighed and looked down on the floor.  Well, that kind of answered the question itself.  Siwon was not okay.  Leeteuk took the seat beside him.  He poured the alcohol into the glass until it is half-full then he pushed it to Siwon.

“You wanna share with me?  Your problem?” Leeteuk asked again.

“Nah…” Siwon shook his head, “It’s fine.  The same old problem anyway.  I have to wait for Tiffany to say yes.”

“Oh.  That.  I don’t mind you know, if you want to go get married first,” Leeteuk said.

“You have no problem.  But, Tiffany see that as a big problem,” he said.  As he mentioned that, he drank all the alcohol in one shot.  Then, he took the bottle from Leeteuk and poured into his own glass.  This time, he made it full.

“Well, yeah.  These sisters have strong bonding between them, Siwon.  They will never hurt each other.  They will always do what they think is the best for each other,” Leeteuk said.

“Even sharing the same wedding day?” this time Siwon had already taken his third shot.  Leeteuk took the glass and the bottle away from him.

“Enough, Siwon.  Let’s get you some fresh air,” Leeteuk said.  He pulled Siwon to the balcony to enjoy the cold, night air.

“Better?” Leeteuk asked him.

“A looottt bet-tah…”

“Siwon?”

“Yeeeessss?  Hahahaha!!!”

“Siwon, you look so drunk.  Was that your first time drinking?” Leeteuk tried to hold Siwon tight especially when he started to lean on the railing.

“Noooo!!!  Not first tiiiimeee,” Siwon answered.  There were some struggles and things were getting out of hand.  Before Leeteuk could register things in his mind, he saw he was looking at Siwon who was facing up to him, while going further down and nearer and nearer to the concrete two floors beneath them.

“Siwon!!!!!” Leeteuk shouted, all too late.

Emelyn who was still awake ran out of Tiffany’s room.  The jump of the bad spring even woke Tiffany up, but still on the bed.  The thing Emelyn saw was Leeteuk, looking down from the balcony trying to reach something that had fallen.  Except that it was not a thing.  It is a person.  Emelyn knew it was Siwon.

“Tiffany!!!” she shouted.  At the sound of her shouting, Leeteuk turned to face her and gave a fearful look.  Tiffany ran to get Emelyn.

“Why?  What happened?  Emelyn?” Tiffany shook her.

“Call the ambulance,” she told Tiffany.

Tiffany who was unaware of the real situation was sculpted on the floor.  It was Leeteuk who reached for the phone first and he called the ambulance right away.  Emelyn took her phone and looking for the contact number of the only person she could trust right now.

“Onew, I need you here.”

+++++

“Tiff, it’s okay.  Everything is going to be alright,” Seohyun said, but Tiffany could hear a little doubt at the edge of her voice.

“It’s my fault.  I shouldn’t quarrel with him,” Tiffany cried.

“Not your fault, Tiff.  No.  Things are just weird.  Things are just getting out of our hands.  I don’t know,” Emelyn said.

“Seo, did you tell Tae about this?” Tiffany asked.

“No.  Thought that she already had enough in her head right now,” Seohyun answered.

Leeteuk and Onew took the seat in front of them.  Leeteuk, who had the most trauma of seeing Siwon falling down were quiet ever since Siwon was brought into the operating theatre.  Onew didn’t speak either.  It was nothing unusual.  He was always quiet anyway.  They waited for another hour before the doctor came out of the automatic door.

“Any relative to Siwon?” she asked.

“No.  They are coming soon.  But, I am his girlfriend,” Tiffany said.

“Well.  He passed the critical stage.  There’s no internal injury to the brain, which I would say quite fortunate.  But, patient suffers an injury to his cardiac muscle due to the fall.  He will be put under intensive care.  Only two persons can visit him at a time,” the doctor said.

“Thank God!” Tiffany cried.

“But, we found a suspiciously high amount of drug and alcohol in his drink.  Any comment on this?” the doctor asked.  That really shocked them.

“He was drunk.  He drank some alcohol.  But, the drug?  I don’t know.  I mean, I was with him while he drank.  He didn’t take any drug,” Leeteuk explained.  The doctor looked very confused but remained calm.

“I will take care of that,” said the doctor and she went away after that.

Emelyn could feel Onew’s hand holding hers.  He gave her a squeeze and looked deeply into her eyes.  Emelyn replied with another stare.

“We need to talk,” said Onew.  Emelyn nodded and went with him.  Leeteuk followed them with his eyes.

+++++

It was a week after those horrible incidents involving Taeyeon and Siwon’s fate.  Junho was still missing and they already filed a police report.  Life had gone upside down for the sisters.  But, they still tried to find the light to at least still walk in this dark time.  Taeyeon was discharged after the doctor was sure she was physically and mentally stable.  Siwon had regained consciousness as well, but was still in the hospital for further treatment.  He too, only remembered talking to Leeteuk.  He didn’t remember falling at all.

Things had not turned normal yet.  They needed Junho to give explanation about what happened to Taeyeon.  The sisters were also curious about the drug in the alcohol.  But, they can do nothing except waited for the police to solve the case.  While waiting, they decided to have a sisters’ day out, well, not exactly because Leeteuk and Onew were coming as well.  Emelyn and Seohyun took Tiffany and Taeyeon to a jungle walk.  Both of them thought that the best thing to cure their sisters’ emotional distress was through the nature itself.  They went jungle walking and decided to stop by the river to rest.

“Thanks, Seo,” said Taeyeon to the youngest of them, for giving her a bottle of fresh cold water collected at the fountain.

“No problem.  You and Tiff have fun.  I’m going to join Em there,” Seohyun pointed towards Emelyn, who was sitting on a big rock in the middle of the river, letting her own feet wet in the stream, “And if you need anything, you can ask Leeteuk or Onew.”

“Sure,” Taeyeon said and gave her a small smile.  Taeyeon had not been speaking a lot after that incident.  Seohyun knew that the oldest too, must find things rather odd, especially with Junho missing without explanation.

“Em!” Seohyun called her sister while carefully walking against the stream.

“Hey, Seo!  Be careful!  The rocks are slippery.  You don’t want to fall, do you?” Emelyn warned her and watched her carefully until she made it beside her.

“Em, are things going back to normal?” Seohyun asked.

“I don’t know, Seo.  Junho is still missing.  Drug thing is still a mystery,” Emelyn shrugged.

“I’ve emailed Minho, you know, about these things.  He was already on his way home.  He took the flight last night.  He will reach here by evening,” Seohyun said.

“Really?  I thought he has class?” Emelyn asked, quite cheerful.

“Well, he was done with his summer class.  After he knew what had been happening to us, he thought that it would be better if he could be here.  Sort of, you know, to keep me safe,” Seohyun said.

“Really, Seo?  That’s really sweet of him.  Besides, there will be someone who will take care of you.  You know, because I can’t be with you all the time.  I have this thing I need to do with Onew.  You know, right?”
Emelyn said.

“Yeah…I know…” Seohyun face turned dark, “I’m joining them.  You coming?”

“Yeah,” Emelyn nodded and both of them got off the rock.

Things just did not go well for them.  Seohyun stepped on a slippery stone and she fell.  Her head just met an unpleasant contact with the big rock where they were sitting just down.  The world went blank for her.

+++++

“She had bad concussion.  But, I could assure you there’s no internal brain injury.  Her MRI shows that she’s stable,” said the doctor.  He left right after he gave his report.

“Why?!  Why are these happening?!” Tiffany shouted.

“I am sorry.  I was supposed to catch her.  I didn’t.  I am sorry,” Emelyn cried.  Onew quickly hugged her because she looked like she was about to fall apart.

“None of this is your fault, Em,” Taeyeon said.

“First, it’s you, Taeyeon.   Then, it was Siwon.  After that, it’s Seo.  Why are these happening to those I am close to, those who are very dear to me?  Who’s next?  It can’t be Emelyn,” Tiffany cried loudly.

“Guys, listen.  I need to go to the airport to fetch Minho.  Tiff, please take care of Seo.  Em, I want you to go home and rest.  You look like you haven’t been sleeping for a week.  Onew, please accompany her,” Taeyeon had things sorted out for them, “Leeteuk, do you want to go with Tiff or with me?”

“I’ll send Onew and Emelyn home first and I’ll drive back here to be with Tiffany,” Leeteuk kindly offered.

“No, it’s o-”

“That would be a good idea because you too, Onew, looks like you haven’t been sleeping for a week,” Taeyeon quickly said before Onew could disagree.

“Alright.  If you say so,” Onew replied.  He looked at Leeteuk who gave him a suspicious stare.  He held Emelyn even tighter.

Before they went to where they were supposed to be, Taeyeon and Leeteuk saw Onew and Emelyn whispering to each other.  Then there was a doubtful nod before they followed Leeteuk to the car.

+++++

The trip home was quiet.  None of them spoke at all.  Leeteuk was of course focusing on the road, Onew was always quiet and Emelyn really had nothing to say.  She really felt tired anyway, like the world weighed on her.  Leeteuk was driving quite slowly but they didn’t question that.  He even walked them to the apartment.  Emelyn thought he was supposed to go back to the hospital to accompany Tiffany.  But, he didn’t.

The moment they stepped into the apartment, Leeteuk pushed both of them onto the floor.  He quickly got inside and locked the door of the apartment.

“What the hell are you doing?!” Onew quickly hugged Emelyn.

“Why don’t you ask your girlfriend, Onew?  Oh, I forget.  You already knew.  She told you everything, didn’t she, on what she had done?” Leeteuk asked.

“What had I done?” Emelyn asked.

“You tell me, Emelyn.  Taeyeon, Siwon, Seohyun and all those unfortunate incidents.  It was you, Emelyn.  All this while,” Leeteuk smirked.

“No,” she answered, “It was you.”

Onew helped her stood up.  Emelyn and Onew had waited this moment from the first incident happened.  The moment of truth.  Onew took a brave step and stood between Leeteuk and Emelyn.  He’s Emelyn’s boyfriend and Emelyn was always his concern.

“Don’t lie, Emelyn.  I saw you, with your bleeding hand that night.  You just killed Junho and bruised Taeyeon.  Maybe you were the one that drugged her too.  Then, I saw you went out again and you dumped Junho in the lake, tied him up to rock so that he won’t float again.  I saw you put the drug in the alcohol drink.  I saw you let Seohyun slipped and hit the rock.  I saw you.  So, don’t lie,” he said.

“I love my sister and I won’t do that to them.  I won’t bruise them, I won’t destroy their source of happiness and I won’t kill them,” Emelyn said.

“Leeteuk, please.  You’re sick,” Onew said.

“I’m sick, you say?  You girlfriend’s sick.  What does she think?  This is some kind of a killing game?” Leeteuk asked.

“What?  I didn’t kill anybody!” she barked.

“I’m sorry, Emelyn.  I know you are Taeyeon’s sister.  But, you destroy your family, so I have to destroy you,” Leeteuk’s smirking.

“You destroy my family!” Emelyn shouted.  Onew took her away from Leeteuk.  But, that also meant away from the only door to escape.

“Leeteuk, don’t.  We had enough.  We don’t want any more harm to anybody,” Onew said calmly, although his heart was racing inside his chest.

But, before he knew it, Leeteuk already gave him a full blow at his cheek.  He was thrown to the floor.  With nobody guarding Emelyn, Leeteuk found it easier to grab her.  He choked her down.  Emelyn tried to punch, to kick or to even move.  She was pinned down completely by Leeteuk and was struggling to breathe.
Suddenly, there was a sound of glass breaking and shattering on the floor.  Leeteuk was no longer choking her.  Emelyn never felt the air was so good in her life.  It was Onew.  He hit Leeteuk with a glass vase.  Onew quickly grabbed Emelyn to lead her to the door while Leeteuk took time to regain himself.  But, they were slow.  Leeteuk grabbed Emelyn by her ankle.  Emelyn grabbed the side of couch to avoid getting nearer to Leeteuk.

“No!” Onew said.  He tried to pull Emelyn but he was pushed instead.

“I won’t let you escape, Emelyn.  You are guilty,” Leeteuk tried to choke her down again.

“No.  You are guilty, Leeteuk.  You’re sick!” she shouted and punched him in the face.
It was not that hard, but enough to made his vision unclear for a little while.  Onew took that chance to drag her away from him.  Unfortunately, Onew tripped by the sofa and landed right beside the kitchen counter.

“You can’t run away from me.  Don’t even try,” Leeteuk warned and tried to choke Onew.

Emelyn was panicked.  She snatched the nearest fork she could find from the kitchen and quickly planted it on Leeteuk’s hand.  He let go of Onew.  But, he became angrier and more uncontrollable.  He pulled out the fork from his hand and tried to get back at Emelyn.  She thought she was going to die, but Onew quickly became her armour and received the hit.

The world suddenly got too quiet for Emelyn, that it was haunting her.  Onew stared at her, pain was evident in his eyes.  Leeteuk laughed an evil laugh and Emelyn felt rage in her own emotion.  She wanted to shout but she became voiceless, like a mute.  Leeteuk looked at her and smiled creepily.  He pulled out the fork from Onew’s chest and stabbed him again and again and again.

Leeteuk was about to stabbed Onew again for the seventh time, but Emelyn took a sharp kitchen knife and cut Leeteuk at his hand.  The cut was deep but not enough to live a fatal wound.  Leeteuk snatched the knife from her and gave her a very deep cut at her neck, perhaps cutting her vein even, because she saw blood pouring out before she sank to the floor.

“Emelyn…” Onew, at the verge of dying, extended his hand to her neck and tried to stop the blood from pouring, wasted.

“I’m s-sorry I c-couldn’t pro…protect you,” he said.  She stared at him as his eyes closing and he died with his hand still at her neck, covering her wound.

Emelyn thought she was going to die.  But, she heard the sound of the door opened and someone who looked like Minho rushed to the scene.  Leeteuk threw the knife away and raised both his hand.

“I didn’t mean it.  She tried to kill Onew, I was trying to save him.  Then, she tried to kill me.  It was self-defence,” she could only hear it because the world was getting dark.

“I know, Leeteuk.  Let’s get you out of here,” that was the last sound she heard.

+++++

When Emelyn opened her eyes again, she was staring at the right ceiling.  She can’t move her neck.  It felt stiff, if not painful.  It was Tiffany who stood up and Emelyn looked at her.  She looked like she had been crying all day.

“Oh God, Emelyn.  You’re awake,” she wiped her tears, “You alright?  You feel uncomfortable anywhere?  Pain?”

Emelyn stared at Tiffany.  Unlike Taeyeon and Siwon, she remembered clearly what happened that night.  But, she wished she didn’t.

“How long have I been here?” Emelyn asked her sister.

“Three days,” Tiffany said.  She sounded so relieve.

“Where’s Leeteuk?  Is he caught?” Emelyn asked again.  Tiffany was surprised.

“You remember?” Tiffany answered her with another question.

“Crystal,” she told her, giving sign there’s nothing to be hidden from her.

“Em, I’m really sorry.  Onew, he-”

“Don’t, Tiff.  Just don’t.  I know what happened,” Emelyn said.  This time she can’t hold it in.  Tears rolled down her cheeks.

“It was unfortun-”

“It was a tragedy,” Emelyn cut Tiffany again.  She cried and stopped when she felt pain at her neck.  Tiffany wiped her tears with a tissue.

“You knew from the beginning that it was Leeteuk.  You knew he’s schizophrenic,” Tiffany said.

“Onew and I knew,” she replied.

“How?”

“Tiff, Onew was a major in Psychology and Human Behaviour.  And me?  I am still majoring in Psychology and Human Behaviour.  It didn’t take us that long to read Leeteuk.  The moment he told us about what happened to Tae, I knew that there was something wrong with him.  I followed him.  I saw he dumped Junho’s body into the lake.  I told Onew.  Both of us studied him,” she said.

“Why didn’t you tell us?” Tiffany asked.

“If Siwon did the same, I wouldn’t be able to tell anybody else too.  What do you expect, Tiff?  I was scared.  I was scared that I will ruin my sister’s happiness.  Taeyeon was so happy with Leeteuk.  What would you think if I come to you and told you your boyfriend is a freak and a killer?” Emelyn asked her sister rationally.

“But, you told Seo,” Tiffany said.

“Because she too, suspected something was wrong.  She asked me and since she was already suspicious I just had to confirm that to her,” Emelyn said.

“And Seo told Minho.  She did a good job by telling him.  If not, with Seo unconscious and you with Leeteuk, we wouldn’t know what happened at home.  When Minho got here and knew that Leeteuk was alone with you guys, he sent the police right away,” Tiffany told Emelyn something she didn’t know.

“Tell Taeyeon not to worry.  He will not be given a death sentence.  He’s schizophrenic.  He’s sick.  He can’t tell the reality from fantasy.  He had this fantasy of me killing.  I just don’t understand why it had to be me,” Emelyn said with tears, “How’s Seohyun anyway?”

“She’s okay.  Woke right after Minho came,” Tiffany said and at the mention of Minho, she saw Emelyn was about to break.

“Em…I’m really sorry about Onew,” Tiffany said.

“I am sorrier for Tae.  Her boyfriend bruised her, killed her friend.  At least, I know Onew died defending me, Tiff,” Emelyn said.

Tiffany knew the tone that Emelyn just spoke.  It was not of vengeance.  It was full with sisterhood and sincerity.  Tiffany just knew things would be better for them in the future.

Summer Lesson

Description: They learned more than when they were in classes.
Rating: PG-13
Characters: Choi Seunghyun (BigBang), Choi Sooyoung (SNSD), Kim Jonghyun (SHINee), Luna (f(x)), Park Gyuri (KARA), Yang Yoseob (Beast)
Disclaimer: I do not own the characters in the fiction.  The story is only a narrative and does not involve any real life situation.  The whole plot of the story is written originally by myself.  If there's any similarity to other fictions, it is totally a coincidence.

Yoseob was not joking when he said he worked as a full-time dishwasher at a café nearby his campus.  People said that he should do internship over the summer and got paid even better.  Well, he could agree with that but the purpose of him working as a full-time dishwasher was because he wanted to be charitable.  Money was not something he was desperate for, but all he needed were experience and social satisfaction.  That was part of the plan anyway.  That was part of their plan.
Yoseob did not know who first came up with the idea but after they came back from their spring break, all of them agreed to do something that can bring more meanings to their lives and others’.  All six of them ended up working at the same café, taking full-time job for a month.  He was the dishwasher, Jonghyun was the cashier, Gyuri and Luna were the waitresses, while Seunghyun and Sooyoung were working as baristas.  Everything worked out pretty well so far.
Nevertheless, working in the café was actually only the first phase of their plan.  The plan was they were going to work for a month.  The pay check they received at the end of it was going to proceed to charity work.  Each of them had their own activity planned, in ways they were most comfortable with.   Not that they were uncomfortable doing charity together, but it happened that their charity targets were different.  That explained the different activities.

“More cups and saucers for you,” Luna put another tray of cups and saucers beside the kitchen sink.  Yoseob laughed.
“I’m tired,” he said.
“Bear with it.  It is our last day,” she smirked.
Yoseob smirked back.  He turned the tap off and held the side of the sink.  Standing up for hours made his heels painful and looking at the stained dishes didn’t help.  Moreover, he was the only one among the six of them working in the kitchen with other adult chefs.  The other five were working happily at the front and didn’t even do the heavy work.  Well, except for the waitresses, the others were not.

+++++

Luna set up her portable table and stool at the pedestrian walk.  She took out her different types of sketching pencils and put it on the table.  Finally, she put her sketching book on the drawing stand.  All those stuffs, she bought it using her café salary.  Well, she did not use all of them obviously.  That money and the money she was going to get from her sketching later will be donated to the old folks’ home.  That’s her target and besides doing charity, she wanted to gain more experience in her major in visual arts.  The plan itself was good; she just needed to see how it will all work out.

“I swear I don’t know that we chose the same street for our things,” that was Jonghyun talking.
“Oh my God!  Dude!  What are you doing here?” it was a surprise to her seeing Jonghyun with his guitar here.
“Well, it seems like I’m gonna have to sing and play music beside you while you draw, or sketch, or whatever you are planning to do,” Jonghyun smiled.
Luna was surprised, but it was good actually to see someone she knew while doing her stuff.  At least, she felt less lonely that way.  She quickly explained to Jonghyun her plan and to whom the charity money will proceed to later.
“Sounds good.  I’m looking for experience too for my music major.  But, the money from this street singing and those from the salary are going to be given to an orphanage,” explained Jonghyun.
“Cool!  Then, why don’t I be your first listener?  How much do I need to pay?” Luna asked.  Jonghyun laughed to that and gave her a folder full of songs choice.
“It’s up to you how much you wanna pay.  But, first of all, pick up your song,” said Jonghyun.
“Dude.  This is amazing.  You are like a radio where I can request songs.  Also, I got to choose how much I wanna pay,” Luna tossed a ten-dollar note into a piggy bank Jonghyun had put in front of himself, “Jason Mraz, I’m Yours.”
“Nice song,” Jonghyun said and getting ready with the guitar, “And why don’t you start drawing me?  I promise I will pay when you are done,” Jonghyun suggested.
“That’s…cool!!!  Alright.  All set,” Luna moved to her place and both of them started their missions.
That drew the public’s attention to them.

+++++

She had done it in the morning at a different park not too far from here.  She was quite sure she would be able to get more attention this evening.  She supposed to.  She needed attention, or else her mission was not able to succeed.  Her target was people’s health.  No people, then no project.  That’s it.

“Seriously, this morning I managed to get only seven women and seven dollars!” she patted her handmade signboard, written “A-Dollar Aero-Dance.  Easy and Fun.  Lose Weight and Be Healthy” in black ink.  Sooyoung rolled her eyes at her own piece of work, noticing how uncreative it was.
“It’s so silly, that name of your project,” voice of a man, very deep.
Sooyoung turned her head to the owner of the voice and she saw a man, well, not exactly, but a bear.  Not a real bear but a bear suit with a man in it.  The sight was cute but the words were offending.
“Who are you then, silly-suited man?” she asked, giving back to the man.

That bear-man pulled the head off and the man revealed himself as Seunghyun.  Sooyoung wanted to laugh if she was not more surprised.
“Seriously?  Seunghyun?  Bear?  What’s your plan in that suit?” she asked.
“Well, you see.  My target is kids.  I brought balloons and milk and juice with me.  I think that if I could make them happier, I would feel better,” Seunghyun explained.  Sooyoung was amused.
“Wow!  That’s very noble of you.  It was a surprise, you know, someone like you.  I mean, I’ve never seen you with kids before.  I would take it in better if it was Jonghyun or Yoseob,” she said rather frankly.
“I know.  That’s why I choose to do this.  I want to see if I could handle them.  I want to see if I could level with them,” he said.
“You’re funny, you know that, Seunghyun?” Sooyoung stared again at her signboard.
“I know I am.  But, I still stand with my opinion.  Your project’s name’s silly,” Seunghyun stared also at the board.
“You think so?” Sooyoung asked, offended again.
“A-Dollar Aero-Dance?” he shrugged.
“Well, yes.  Aerobic and dancing.  Where can you get any class with both activities in it for one dollar?” Sooyoung defended her idea.
“Well, your activities are good.  But, you could change the name,” Seunghyun gave his thought.
“What am I supposed to name it?” asked her.
“What are you collecting money for?” without answering her, he asked another question.
“To the Women’s Society.  I’ll make sure the money goes to single mothers,” she said.
“You’re good.  Very thoughtful,” Seunghyun smiled.
“So…you have a name for my project?” she asked again.
“On the second thought, you can just proceed with that, but add in “Leave your kids attended by Mr. Bear!” somewhere in it,” Seunghyun suggested.
“What do you mean exactly?” Sooyoung was confused.
“Well, you know.  You are a woman and you might be able to attract more women than men.  But, if women have kids with them, how could they exercise with you?  So, they could leave their kids with me and join your project.  This is just a suggestion though,” said Seunghyun.
“You mean you will join me?” asked her.
“Yeah,” he nodded.
“Oh, Seunghyun.  Thanks a lot for helping me.  That’s…that’s very kind of you,” Sooyoung suddenly turned very bright.
“Nope.  We help each other,” he said humbly.
“Oh, yes.  My project, it is twice a day, morning and evening, every day,” she explained because he might not want to join after he knew that.
“It’s fine.  I’ll join you whenever wherever,” Seunghyun gave his assurance.  Sooyoung smiled.
“You sure?  It is summer, you know that?  You might get heat stroke staying in that suit for hours,” she asked him again.
“Don’t worry.  I’ll manage that,” he assured her.

+++++

Gyuri was wandering at the corridor, looking at patients being pushed in wheelchairs, at visitors who wore sad faces around.  Such a scene, but she was getting used to it by now.  Since the beginning of the summer, Gyuri had been coming to the hospital after getting off work.  It was because of a particular boy.
“Gyuri, out of many places on Earth, I see you here.”
Gyuri quickly turned her head towards the voice and for a while, she thought she had her neck broken.  She saw Yoseob, with flowers and books in both hands and he had a green nametag attached to his shirt.
“What are you doing here?” Gyuri was surprised to see him, but she smiled at the sight of him.
“I am a hospital volunteer.  That’s my project.  What are you doing here?” Yoseob smiled back.
“Hospital volunteer?  That’s…very kind of you.  I…I am helping a certain someone.  Yeah, helping a certain someone,” Gyuri did not know how to describe herself.  She was sure as hell all her friends were like Yoseob, doing charity for a number of people in their own chosen groups.  Her target was only a boy.
“Really?” Yoseob asked and for a moment Gyuri thought he was going to laugh, “Who’s that lucky person?” he asked.
“Are you done with your job?” she asked without answering.
“I am going to my last department.  The cancer patients’ ward,” answered Yoseob.
“Good.  I am heading there too,” Gyuri said and quickly pulled Yoseob with her.  He just followed without any words since he’s heading there anyway.
Gyuri stopped in front of a room of a patient.  Yoseob saw she gripped even stronger the envelope she had been holding since just now.
“He’s Dongwoon and no, he’s not lucky.  He has been battling with chronic leukaemia for four years now.  The doctor says there’s yet a suitable donor and the cancer cells have spread to his heart and lungs.  He has never left this room since that.  The doctor says he’s too weak,” Gyuri explained before she took Yoseob into the room.
“You’re helping him!” Yoseob was more surprised.  Gyuri nodded.
“I am just doing what I can,” she said.
“How do you get to know him?” Yoseob asked.
“He is…my brother,” Gyuri said. This time Yoseob felt like he had just been stupefied.  All of them friends knew that Gyuri was the only child of her single mother.
“You’re joking,” he went.
“No, Yoseob.  The patient inside this room and I, we’re siblings.  Same dad,” she revealed.
“Wow!  Spectacular, I guess,” Yoseob just cannot find the right word at the moment.
“Yeah.  It’s a long story.  Anyway, you want to meet him or not?” asked Gyuri, didn’t want to extend the conversation.
“Oh, yes.  Might as well get on with my job,” he said.
Gyuri pushed the door opened and both of them walked in.  Yoseob saw someone, even by the sight of him lying on the bed he could tell that the patient was tall.  It was unnerving to see the boy.  To Yoseob, Dongwoon looked like a corpse, maybe just waiting to die again.  He was pale and fragile, not to mention thin.  But, he gave Gyuri a sincere smile, very sincere that Yoseob felt like the world could be a happier place.

“You come,” said Dongwoon, voice soft and weak.
“How are you today?” Gyuri asked, while having a silent monologue with herself, ‘What do you expect, Gyuri?  He is obviously sick on the bed.’
“Never better,” he said optimistically and Gyuri nodded.  It was the same answer from him every day.
“How’s chemo?” she asked.  Dongwoon shrugged.
“Good, I guess.  I hope I will be able to go for surgery this time round,” Dongwoon said, “If ever I get a suitable donor or even have enough money for that,” he sounded hopeless.
“Doojoon is at the booth.  Our selling is getting better.  Even the result for the photography competition is going to come out tomorrow.  I believe we can win at least the 2500 dollars,” Gyuri said.  Yoseob was clueless on what they are talking about.
“I am sorry that you and Doojoon have to go through this,” Dongwoon was sincere.  That was what Yoseob deduced.
“Who’s Doojoon?” Yoseob asked for explanation.
For a second, the room was too quiet because the other two seemed to forget that Yoseob was still there.  But, before things got rather awkward, Dongwoon’s lips quickly formed a smile.
“You didn’t tell me you brought a friend,” Dongwoon said and then looked at Yoseob, smiling, “Hi, there.  Doojoon is my brother.”
“Our brother.  I forget to introduce you to Yoseob.  Dongwoon, that’s my friend, Yoseob.  And Yoseob, this is Dongwoon,” she just made it quick.
“Hi Dongwoon.  I am Yoseob, a hospital volunteer,” Yoseob took the chance to introduce himself.
After that, he quickly changed the dried flower in the vase on the bedside table.  He also poured water into the vase.  Then, he gave Dongwoon a few books that he can read.
“For you, in case you are bored,” Yoseob said.  Dongwoon eyes sparkled.
“Thanks.  I don’t know what to do in this room anymore.  This is something really thoughtful,” he thanked Yoseob.
“Well, yeah.  I have something for you too,” Gyuri gave Dongwoon an envelope and Dongwoon stared at it with a frown.  He took it from her anyway and opened it with care.  There were photos in it, of people, plants, animals, cars etc.  In short, they told story of life outside of his confined space in the hospital.
“Wow!  This is…Gyuri, this is just…you’re really kind.  After what dad did to you, you’re still good t-”
“No, Dongwoon.  It’s fine.  It’s fine,” Gyuri stopped him before he can get too far.  Yoseob quickly understood that the conversation was no longer for him to listen to.  He made a move to the door.
“I’ll be back.  Later, not too soon.  I still have to meet other patients in other rooms,” Yoseob said, trying to give them assurance that they can talk as much as they wanted.
Gyuri and Dongwoon did have a good conversation together.  Gyuri told him a lot of things.  That Doojoon was going to come visit the next day, that the booth Gyuri and Doojoon set up at the Art Festival was a hit and their photographs were selling good, that both Gyuri and Doojoon were sending their best photographs taken for photography competition advertised in the newspaper to get money for his medication and more.  They talked until Dongwoon told Gyuri that he was tired and wanted to sleep.  Gyuri let him sleep, hoping that he won’t just go away with it.  She continued staring at his sleeping face until Yoseob knocked the door and came in.
“He’s asleep,” she almost whispered and Yoseob understood the situation and just waited outside until Gyuri joined him.
They walked to the subway station together.  Both of them were quiet at first but Yoseob just cannot control his curiosity any longer.  He needed to know.
“Erm, Gyuri-”
“He looked for me during spring break, my dad.  Dongwoon is very sick and not even my dad, his mother or Doojoon’s bone marrows are compatible for him.  Dad decided to try his luck with me,” Gyuri gave a hint.
“You are going to be a donor?” Yoseob almost shouted.
“I registered.  They are going to test my bone tomorrow and if it is compatible with Dongwoon and if he is in a stable condition, we are going to have the surgery in a month.  That’s…only if they manage to kill the cancer cells in his lungs and heart through chemo,” she explained.
“You’re…really a brave woman,” Yoseob almost lost for words.  Gyuri shook her head.
“Dongwoon is my long lost brother.  So is Doojoon.  When my dad came to see my mom before and my mom persuaded me to do it, the donation, I didn’t want to.  I mean, my dad abandoned me for years and find me only because he needed my help.  But then, when Doojoon met me and talked to me one-to-one and even took me to see Dongwoon, I felt the connection.  At that time, I was thinking that I am not going to help my dad, but my long lost brother,” Gyuri smiled.
“Well, what really happened, before?  You know, your mom, your dad and their mom?  Well, if you don’t mind me knowing?” Yoseob asked.  Gyuri sighed.
“My dad and their mom are husband and wife, even back then.  My mom told me this.  There’s something like bachelorette party for his friend and he and she joined and that’s when it happened, I happened.  My dad takes responsibility though.  I mean, all my expenses are given to mom by dad, since I was a baby.  Even until now, including my tuition fees.  My mom and dad never really communicate with each other though.  The money is always in the bank account.  That’s the only part disappointing me a lot, that he never really tries to have a bonding with me,” Gyuri explained.
“Well, you’re a person with big heart,” Yoseob complimented.
“I tried my best.  Both Doojoon and I, we take after dad.  We are into photography.  With the café salary, I bought a better camera set to take better photos.  Doojoon and I open a booth at the Art Festival to raise enough money for Dongwoon.  We also send our photos for photography competition, like a lot of them.  We try to win money.  We do everything in our might,” said Gyuri.
“He’ll make it through.  Dongwoon, I mean,” Yoseob said.
“You really think so?” Gyuri’s eyes sparkled.
“I met a lot of patient today, Gyuri.  Just one day makes me able to tell which of them are giving up or which of them are determined to live.  Dongwoon is the type who wants to live to die old,” Yoseob smiled.
For the first time that evening, Gyuri’s tears flowed down and a bright smile formed from her lips.
“I know,” she said.

+++++

Jonghyun knew that he didn’t take any class for the summer but he also knew that he learned more than when he was in classes.  This thing they were doing taught them that life was not simple.  It was not like you sit down in classes, you learn, you pass exam, you get a job and live happily.  There’s something more than that.  You’re not living alone in this world.  There are others.  If you succeed alone, that’s only a success.  The victory, the highest achievement in your life however, could only be gained when you can bring others to success with you.  That’s what Jonghyun learn.
He chose the orphanage because he thought those kids were very unfortunate to live by themselves at such young ages.  Jonghyun knew very well his own parents gave him everything to see him succeed in his own life.  But them?  They didn’t have parents anymore.  He just thought if he could give just a small service of what his parents had given him all this while, they might be able to succeed to.  That’s his target.
The six of them only have 3 weeks of summer holiday before the classes begin again.  After a month working at the café and after a month involving themselves with the society and gain money, it was about time for them to give back to the society.  After the café and street singing, Jonghyun got more than enough money to spend for the kids at the orphanage.  Part of it thanked to Choi Minho, a loyal customer that asked for a song every morning and gave ten dollars in return.  Jonghyun went to the orphanage every morning these three weeks to spend time with them.  He took them to the bookstore.  He bought them clothes, books and school’s necessity.  He bought them food they never get to eat.

What made Jonghyun happier was that he had this deal with Luna ever since they first knew their projects at the same street.  They will spend the last three weeks of summer together.  In the morning, Luna helped him at the orphanage.  In the evening, he helped Luna at the old folks’ home.  Things went smooth.  Jonghyun got to see happy faces of the kids and Luna got to cherish her time with those old and wise people, just like she used to with her late grandmother.  It was a good deal and Jonghyun could never find such a happy summer in his life.
“Jonghyun, it’s about time for us to go,” Luna reminded him when he was helping a girl to try the school uniform they bought for her just now at the bookstore.  Jonghyun nodded.
Luna and Jonghyun wanted to get off early that day.  They wanted to see Gyuri before she went for the surgery.  Since they knew about Gyuri and her brother, they had always wished for a miracle to happen.  It did happen.  Gyuri was proven compatible by Dongwoon’s medical team and Dongwoon was stable enough to go through a surgery.  The surgery on Gyuri will happen in the afternoon and Dongwoon will have it tomorrow morning.  All of them promised to be there.
They met Gyuri and also Yoseob, Seunghyun and Sooyoung.  They also met Doojoon for the first time.  He looked very concerned but Gyuri looked exceptionally bright.  She was ready to be rolled into the operating room.  She asked them to look after Dongwoon while she was in the room.  They promised her.  When she was rolled in, they prayed that everything will go well.
“She’s brave, isn’t she?” Luna asked.

“She is very brave,” Doojoon answered.
Jonghyun smiled.

+++++

Seunghyun smiled when the doctor told them that the surgery on Dongwoon was a success.  Sooyoung held his arm very tight that he could feel it was getting numb.  She smiled too.  Both of them looked at Gyuri on the wheelchair.  She was pale and tired after the surgery yesterday but the news can’t prevent her to smile out of joy.  He hugged Doojoon, for the first time after they met.  Jonghyun and Luna who was just arrive also jumped out of joy.  Yoseob thanked Lee Jinki, the doctor, bowed and shook hands with him, but he just felt that was not enough for the doctor who just saved his new friend.

Seunghyun looked at Gyuri, now with tears in her face, being pushed by Doojoon to Dongwoon’s room perhaps.  She looked very happy.  It was like the highest achievement in her life.  Out of all of them, she was the only one whose target is a person, only a person.  He might be kind, giving kids healthy food and looking after them and making them happy with the balloons.  Sooyoung might be nice by getting men and women to look after their health by dancing and exercising and also helping single mothers out there.  But, Gyuri was saint.  She was determined to collect money to save a brother she never knew was exist and she was brave enough to go through pain by becoming a donor herself.
Seunghyun concluded that by having a big group in the society to give help doesn’t make a person more thoughtful than the one who chooses to help only a person.  It was how a person means it and determines to give all for the others that matter the most.  Gyuri showed them that at least.  Yoseob even told him that he saw how dedicated Gyuri was to motivate Dongwoon to live and fight until the end and that was that motivated Yoseob to the same to others in the hospital.  Seunghyun smiled at his own thought and followed the others who were going to Dongwoon’s ward.
They learned a lot that summer.

The First Flower Bloom

Description: The lawyer wanted to prove the innocence of his client, but the defendant wanted to plead guilty. (Psychological thriller, AU!)

It was cold and it was not going to get warmer any soon.  The winter took forever and the spring decided to wait.  There was no sign for green.  There was not sign for flower buds.  The trees were bald and the weather was gloomy.  Gloomy April was never good.  It was a bad sign, at least, for him.

It was the first time in his life as an attorney, a defendant wanted to plead guilty, when his lawyer clearly wanted to fight for him.  Attorney usually recommended a plea bargain to defendant, to reduce the charge on him, even though sometimes the defendant was not guilty.  In Jonghyun’s case right now, all the evidence strongly pointed towards his client as the murderer, but with his so-called lawyer intuition he knew his client was not guilty.  He offered to help him, to fight for his case, to find evidences that confirm his innocence, but Seunghyun insisted to plead guilty.  What on Earth is happening?  A client was ready to be convicted with freaking murder charge without trial?

“How do you know he is not guilty?” Sooyoung asked.  Sooyoung was his private investigator.  She had worked with him for many years and because of her, Jonghyun had never lost his cases.

“I just know it, okay!” he raised his voice.  He did not like people questioning his verdict.

“Chill.  You will wake your son up,” Sooyoung reminded him.

Jonghyun stopped pacing around when he remembered his son.  He sat down on his leather chair, facing Sooyoung.  They were in his mini office in his home, talking about this case since the evening they got back from the jail.  The prosecutor offered a plea bargain in which Seunghyun had to admit guilty and they will reduce the charge on the reason of mental illness.  But, Jonghyun knew by heart that Seunghyun was not guilty, not at all.  He was not a psycho killer, not even near.

“They offer to reduce the charge, Jonghyun.  It is a good deal,” Sooyoung voiced again.

“And what?  He will end up in a mental hospital without being crazy?” Jonghyun asked back.

“How do you know he is not crazy?  He spoke to an imaginary buddy named Minnie who asked him to kill.  Is he not a psycho to you?” Sooyoung asked.

“The way he spoke to Minnie is different.  Not in a killer-mode, not like that at all,” Jonghyun softened his glare.  He sighed.

“In what mode then?”

“The tone he used was like the tone I used when I speak to my wife,” Jonghyun said and Sooyoung froze.

+++++

Yoseob was called to the county jail by his friend, an attorney who was currently working with a psycho killer.  The prosecutor had their own psychiatrist examined Jonghyun’s client, and the result confirmed him to be schizophrenic.  When a psychiatrist had already confirmed that, Yoseob felt ridiculous for Jonghyun to ask him to confirm again.

“I don’t think it is schizophrenia.  Just examine him again,” Jonghyun begged.

“You wanted me to be in a room with a murderer.  How good is that?  Jonghyun, as your friend, I will always support you in whatever you do.  But, not this, when someone is confirmed a psycho by a professional psychiatrist.  Besides, it can reduce his charge for being mentally ill,” Yoseob tried to be reasonable.

“That’s the problem.  I don’t think my client kills.  He is not harmful.  I was with him yesterday and he was not at all furious or out of control.  He looked like he could fall apart any time.  He looked tearful and distracted and he tried to communicate with Minnie,” Jonghyun explained.

“Yes?  So, unable to distinguish between reality and fantasy.  He’s schizophrenic.  And you said he doesn’t kill?  He murdered his own sister and son.  I would call you a psycho if you kill your own son as well,” Yoseob went.  At the mention of his son, Jonghyun froze.  The thought of killing his own son will never cross his mind.  His son was the only one he got.

“I just think it could be a scheme plotted by the prosecutor to win the case.  They made the plea bargain, my client admit guilty, end of case.  But, I know by heart he is not guilty.  The story that he killed his own sister and son is something that people believe, that the prosecutor believe and try to make more people believe it.  But, not me, Yoseob.  Just help me with this one,” Jonghyun begged.  Yoseob sighed.

“Alright, I do this as a court procedure, that you could have a witness from your side.  But, I am going to be honest.  If he came out a psycho, you have to let him plead guilty,” Yoseob said.

“Thanks, buddy.  Thanks a lot,” Jonghyun smiled.

+++++

After an hour, Yoseob came out with a satisfying result for Jonghyun.  For the first time after he was given the case, Jonghyun could feel some hope on his case.  It was almost the same like the first spring flower blooms.

“You are right, Jonghyun.  I think he is mentally stable.  But, he looks broken, like he no longer wants to live.  It is like getting a death sentence is a way for him to escape his life,” Yoseob explains.

“Just like my thought,” Jonghyun nodded.

“Find a way to confirm his innocence, Jonghyun.  Just like you, I think he doesn’t kill.  He’s a doctor.  If he wants to kill, he would have done it earlier,” Yoseob said.  Jonghyun nodded again.

Before they could walk out of the jail, his phone rang.  Jonghyun quickly answered the call when he saw Sooyoung as the caller.

“I have good news,” he said quickly.

“Me too.  I got a search warrant and I went to Seunghyun’s house.  I checked his Polaroid album.  Jonghyun, Minnie was his wife,” Jonghyun heard Sooyoung clearly.  He looked at Yoseob and gave him a sign to follow him.

“I’ll be there soon,” Jonghyun said.

+++++

“No wonder his wife left him.  He is a murderer,” a neighbour said and Jonghyun could just thank her for the information.

“That’s the fifth one that said she left him,” Sooyoung said.

“Even so, nobody had seen her leaving right?” Jonghyun said.

“What are you trying to say?” Sooyoung asked.

“His wife might be dead,” Jonghyun voiced his thought.

“Where’s the body then?” Sooyoung asked again.

“Hidden,” Jonghyun shrugged.

“Not helping you though.  If the body was found, prosecutor could say that it was him murdering his own wife.  Make him more psycho to me,” Sooyoung suggested.

“Impossible.  Seunghyun said Minnie asked him to kill his sister.  Maybe his wife is seeking revenge,” Jonghyun said.

“Whoa.  Whoa.  Mr. Kim, are you implying that he spoke to the spirit of his wife?” Yoseob cut through their conversation.  Jonghyun looked at him.

“Yes, Mr. Yang,” Jonghyun nodded confidently.

“I am a person of science.  If you are saying this supernatural stuff, I’m out of this.  I don’t believe in this stuff.  Besides, the court won’t accept this stuff as evidence,” Yoseob raised both his hands.

“We’ll find evidence through this.  Maybe we could find a way to talk to his wife,” Jonghyun looked at Sooyoung.

“I have to say that you are the one mentally ill, Jonghyun.  Not your client,” Yoseob shook his head in disbelief.

+++++

“She is my friend.  The best I could find,” Sooyoung said.

They were walking through a deserted corridor of an old apartment building.  Jonghyun were told that the building was haunted, but it was afternoon and he couldn’t care less.  The place gave him goosebumps though.

“Thanks a lot,” Jonghyun muttered.

“Still, I don’t think this is a good idea,” she rolled her eyes.

Sooyoung knocked on the door and a few seconds later, it was opened from inside, revealing a young women with face so pale and eyes so distant that Jonghyun was not sure she was looking at him.

“I thought you say two, Sooyoung, but there are three of you,” Luna said and welcomed them inside.

“Is she even human?” Jonghyun muttered to herself.  Out of sudden, the women put her palm on his cheek and smiled to him.

“You could feel my palm young man?” she asked and Jonghyun nodded out of fear, “Is it warm?” Jonghyun nodded again, “Is that not human enough for you?”

Jonghyun nodded a few times until she pulled back her hand and gave him a glare that Jonghyun will remember throughout his life.

“I’m Luna,” she said, “Sorry that you have to walk through this building.  But, I already told my friends that you guys are not harmful.”

“Friends?” Jonghyun asked sarcastically.

“Yes, Mr. Kim.  You, out of all people should understand that it is better to have ghost friends than human friends, should you not?” Luna asked.

“Alright, guys.  Should we discuss the case?” Sooyoung decided to stop their intense staring competition.

+++++

“Is he asleep?” Gyuri asked Jonghyun about their son.

“Yes, he is,” Jonghyun answered his wife.

Gyuri hugged him passionately and Jonghyun felt that his tiredness had gone within seconds.  His wife was always there for him to listen to every single problem he had at work.

“I miss you,” he said.

“I miss you, too,” she replied.

“Am I on the right path, Gyuri?  Is he really not guilty?” Jonghyun asked.

“He’s not.  Trust me, Jonghyun,” Gyuri said softly.

“Always.”

+++++

“Seunghyun, you know what actually happened.  Tell me, so that I could help you clear your name,” Jonghyun tried to persuade him again.

“I killed her.  I killed my sister,” he said.

“I’ve spoken to you a few times.  I know something is missing.  You admit killing your sister but not your son.  What happened actually?” Jonghyun asked him.

“Minnie allowed me to kill, so I killed,” Seunghyun avoided eye contact.

“Minnie is dead,” Jonghyun tested his client.  Seunghyun froze in his seat.

“No.  My fault.  I shouldn’t let her die.  I shouldn’t.  My fault,” he cried.

“Not your fault, Seunghyun.  Not at all.  Your sister, she tried to kill you,” Jonghyun tested again.  At this, Seunghyun shook his head vigorously.

“Not my sister.  I am the bad person.  Just kill me.  Just kill me!” he said.

“My wife told me you are innocent,” Jonghyun said.

“You don’t know me.  All of you.  Don’t know me!  I am a killer,” he said.

“Seunghyun, my wife spoke to yours and your wife said you are innocent,” Jonghyun said.

Seunghyun froze again and looked deeply into his lawyer’s eyes.  For the first time, the tears that he kept since the event happened went down.

+++++

“It happened here,” Luna said once she stepped into Seunghyun’s house.  The crime scene was already cleaned from everything.  Evidence was already bagged by the police and is analysed by their investigators.  Of course they chose the prosecutor’s side, so Sooyoung must do everything she could for Jonghyun.

“The forensic unit said his sister was killed because of head trauma, caused by the corner of this table.  Seunghyun admitted pushing her sister and she knocked her head at the table and died instantly,” Sooyoung explained.  Yoseob could feel his hair stood up.

“Why would he do that?” Yoseob asked.  Luna touched the corner of the table and closed her eyes.  The event replayed in her mind.

“There was a fight,” Luna said.  Yosoeb rolled his eyes.

“Of course, duh,” he said.  Sooyoung ignored Yoseob.

“Yeah.  The neighbour told me Seunghyun killed his son and his sister tried to defend her nephew and he pushed her instead causing her death,” Sooyoung said.

“Doesn’t make sense.  How could the neighbour see inside the house?  The door must be closed,” Yoseob suggested.

“The door was opened.  The neighbour said she saw people struggling and after a while Seunghyun pushed his sister to death,” Sooyoung explained.

“It sounds like Seunghyun was defending himself from his sister,” Yoseob shrugged.

“What is the estimated time of death of his son?” Luna asked.

“That is something strange to me.  Time of death was estimated to be around 6 to 7 pm for his son, but then Seunghyun was seen killing his sister around 9 to 10 pm.  Why would he wait that long to kill his sister if he can just finish them off at once?” Soouyoung asked.

“6 to 7 pm?  He’s already back from work?” Yoseob asked?

“Yes.  According to the neighbour, he is always back by 6 pm.  His workplace confirmed that,” Sooyoung told them the detail.

“There must be something.  Did anybody check his cellphone?” Yoseob asked again.  Sooyoung took time to digest that before she shook her head.

“What is the cause of death of his son?” Luna asked with eyes closed, holding a pen that was on the table just now.

“According to the forensic unit, it was caused by eight stabs, two of them were fatal.  The object used was a long, sharp rod, like a screwdriver,” Sooyoung said.

“Or a pen,” Luna continued, “You said her sister was an art student?” asked Luna.

“She was,” Sooyoung nodded.

“This pen is hers and it was used to kill both his wife and his son,” said Luna.

“His wife?” Yoseob said.

“Backyard.  Flower bed,” Luna said and the three of them sprinted to the back of the house.

+++++

“Forensic unit found her body.  Minnie’s body.  They are examining her right now,” Jonghyun said.  Seunghyun was unresponsive to that.  Jonghyun pulled out the pen and put it on the table between them.

“You recognize this?” he asked.  Seunghyun’s eyes became very wide.

“I killed them.  I killed them all,” he said.

“This pen is belonged to your sister.  The object that killed your son and might as well is the object that killed your wife.  You sister killed and you tried to defend.  Am I right?” Jonghyun asked.

“No.  I killed them.  I killed my wife.  I killed my son,” Seunghyun tried to convince his lawyer.

“Your son died around 6 to 7 pm.  We found your alibi.  You were with a friend that time.  You did not kill anybody.  Why are you doing this to yourself?” Jonghyun looked at him, demanding an honest explanation.

Seunghyun’s shoulders started to fall.  He loosened up and cried in front of his lawyer.  Tears strolled down like waterfall.

“I should have protected them.  My sister was no longer herself since my mom died.  Mom entrusted her to me.  I should protect her.  I was not there for my wife when that happened.  It was my fault.  I knew my sister was unstable, but I didn’t call my neighbour to take care of my son.  I forgot.  Can’t you see?  It is my fault,” Seunghyun said.

“By law, you are not guilty.  So, let me do my job,” Jonghyun said.

“And stain my sister’s name?  My late mother trusted me to take care of her.  She is my responsibility,” Seunghyun argued.

“And mine is you, your wife and your son!” Jonghyun said strictly, “We have the evidence and witnesses.  I can free you from this.  I will do justice to your wife and your son and most importantly to you.”

“I want to be punished,” Seunghyun insisted.

“When it is not entirely your fault?  You should be grateful someone wants to bring justice to your family.  My wife died giving birth to my son.  Who should I blame?  Myself for getting her pregnant?  Or my son because she died to make him live?”  Jonghyun asked loudly.

“I…I’m sorry,” Seunghyun muttered.

“You’re sorry?  So, let me defend you and prove you are still worth living in this world,” Jonghyun said and he left.

+++++

When the jury said he was not guilty, he felt happy and thankful.  He just wanted to get on with his life again.  He failed to save his wife and his son.  But, as a doctor, he still can save thousands of life on Earth.

Alone in his room, he looked at the tree in his front yard.  The first flower of spring had bloomed and it was a sign of hope, of a new beginning.

+++++

He had a good sleep last night.  His wife had accompanied him the whole night and when he woke up that morning, his wife was still there beside him.

“The sun will rise soon,” her wife said and kissed him on his forehead.

“Can you not go, Gyuri?” he asked his wife.

“I’ll come back tonight, Jonghyun.  You are so clingy,” she said.

“I just want be with you for the whole day,” Jonghyun said.

“Aww…cheesy, romantic husband,” she teased him, “Just kiss Yoogeun for me,” and with that she disappeared into thin air.

Then, the door was opened and a boy walked to his bed and lied down beside him.  His son looked at him with his big round eyes.

“Daddy, who were you talking to?”

“Nobody,” he kissed his son’s forehead.

“Detective Sooyoung said you can see and talk to mommy,” Yoogeun said.

“You believed her?” Jonghyun asked.  Yoogeun nodded.

“Mommy died giving birth to me.  Does that make me a killer?” Yoogeun asked him an unexpected question early in the morning.

“No,” Jonghyun patted his son’s head.

“Then, why does she hate me?”  Yoogeun asked again.

“She doesn’t hate you.  What makes you think she hates you?” Jonghyun frowned at his son’s question.

“She only talks to you.  She doesn’t want to talk to me,” Yoogeun said.  Jonghyun laughed to his answer.

“If you want to meet her, you only have to believe that she is always by your side, Yoogeun.  She will come to you,” he said.

Yoogeun looked outside the window while digesting his daddy’s word.  Then, he noticed something that made him smile.

“Daddy, the first flower of spring has bloomed!” he pointed.

Jonghyun hugged his son and thought of hope and happiness.
